Guys,
After two frustrating days at the pond, I decided to have a look at my bearings. I didn't think they would have gone south on me since May, but whadayano.... completely shot. I heat the bearings out, drop the case in an ultrasonic cleaner and start prepping to drop the new bearings in: Remove the dust covers, clean out all the white assembly grease, turn on the oven to 350, get all my parts layed out on my "sterile" towel. As I clean the crank, getting ready to drop the big bearing onto it, I notice what looks like contact marks from the case right behind where the big bearing seats. I go and get the case out of the US cleaner and blow it dry. Then I noticed what looked like rub marks in the rod trough. I look at the bottom lobe of the rod, and sure enough, there are obvious signs of contact. I go back to the case and get out my toolmakers visor and start looking at it very closely for "whatever" and notice a crack going from the crank bore radially out to the bearing seat diameter and contact marks on the bottom side of the crank bore. This would explain the early failure of the bearings.
This is truely a sad day, as this engine was from the very first batch of MAC45's to hit stateside. It's one of the "backward-four" models. I've had it the better part of six years.......
To make a long story short (too late, I know), I'm in need of a MAC45 crank case. I know they're scarce, but I was hoping somebody might have one lying around. Let me know.........
Contact me directly at titan-racing (AT) sbcglobal (DOT) net.
Thanks. Brad.
