Today went out to test the round nose hydro with Astro 25 4t started with x440/3 prop 12 3800's for battery's ran the boat for a minute could barely keep the boat on the water had to really slow down for the turns due to low water and lots of weeds motor temp was 120 f but i also noticed lots of carbon dust about a 2'' dia around the motor brush hood which is Astros open end bell .Is this normal? I just got the motor back from Astro they installed new brush;s Astro also mentioned not to oil the bearing which eliminates me from using motor spray to wash away the carbon dust as i used to do on my 05 motors . What about just blowing the motor out with compressed air? any info would be helpfull.

The only times my Astros spewed carbon was with new brushes, that is likely the problem. I don't know why you can't use motor spray to clean it out however. I suspect that Astro mentioned not oiling the bearings because they found evidence that you had been over-oiling them. Excess oil on the comm will burn it and the brushes. Use the spray and put one drop of quality oil on the outside of each bearing.

BTW, you can prop down to get better control of the hydro. Try an x440 or x438, both two-blade designs.
