I like lead Teflon bushings. They last a long time. I have always drilled a small hole on the side of the strut for water to get in for lubrication. Just finished up a Sport 40 and am getting too lazy to disassemble the strut to drill the hole. For those of you running lead Teflon bushings, is it necessary to drill a hole in the strut?

Thanks,

k

I use lead Teflon bushings in all the drive hardware I make. On my out drives I use 3 bushings. I use 2 at the prop end and 1 at the other end and yes, I do put a grease hole in the out drives and struts.

Thanks all for your inputs. I always put a hole in the strut because according to the instructions of K&B, water is the lubricant for the outboards. But since Mike and Glenn run without a hole, I am going to try it.

For those that run a stuffing tube into the strut and lube with oil, a hole isn't really needed. With bushings, it's probably the same thing. Since some of my boats have bearings, rather than bushings, those I wouldn't run without some way to get grease inside to prevent the bearings from rusting
