I still haven't taken my Mac 84 Hummingbird out, just haven't had any time. I saw the Screaming Eagle video and saw that the guy pretty much just dropped it in the water with lots of revs on board. Anything wrong in doing this? Seem to work good to me.

hmmmm...what should be wrong with doing it this way...it works!

we launch our riggers in a very similar way (normally by a second guy).

Mark,

I doubt your hummingbird will take much of a throw to get it going. However I highly recommend getting someone else to throw it while you drive! Even light weight X hydros start to get a bit awkward and dangerous to solo launch.

Keep your hands (or those of the person throwing it) away from the prop. Got the scars. :(

Ian.

I don't know the Hummingbird personally, but from what I have heard it should not be hard to get launched, i.e. I would try like with an Eagle or Roadrunner, basically just set it on the water with not too much throttle and then let it come up as you increase the speed gradually (i.e. not from 1/3 opening to full opening in 1/10 of a second) on your transmitter.

My Jag II w/a CMB 1.0 was a self launcher but damn, it was so big an akward that your better asking someone else to launch it for you.

I give them the ole "bowling ball" launch, then turn away quickly so I don't get a facefull of water. It still seems to soak down my crotch though.

Thats what I like about boaters.allways looking on the bright side.

TracerBob,

Yeah yeah yeah, I know how rcboaters are, they never want to stop to gp to the restroom so your you volunteer to launch, huff the boat and pee.....

Just kidding!!!!

It's refreshing in the summer, but in the winter......maybe thats why I see some of those west coast namba district 19 guys wearing those apron things. Ever launch a boat and then lose your balance or slip and fall in? Or...try to launch a hydro by yourself and launch the radio with it?     I love humor

hmmmm, so your radio is a self launcher now and then? <_<

Giving the boat a toss helps do 2 things for me. One is putting less stress on the flex cable from the shock of hitting the water, the other is to keep the boat from flipping over backwards. I've gotten used to doing this on all of my boats plus the farther you can toss it out the less you'll get a faceful of roostertail.

Now if you get a driver that isnt heavy on the throttle when you toss it in, you shouldnt get wet, But if you got a hot fingered driver, you will get soaked.

Mine i can just drop in and go, when my pit guy launches he just kinda gives it alittle shove going in, not hard. I never thought about the stress on the cable like ron said, but if you dont hammer it right off the get go, shouldnt be that stressfull.

I watched a guy that insisted on solo launching his F hydro slip and drop the transmitter as he had just launched the boat. The battery door popped and all the separate nicads fell out. He frantically was trying to put the batteries back in as the boat ripped across the water. Luckily the failsafe was set and kicked to shut it down. Watching him try to insert the nicads was very funny.

I believe the driver thinks it's real funny when he hoses me down and nails the throttle when it hits the water. haha <_<

The ole radio just doesn't get up on plane as well as the boat. I've also seen boats get launched along with the boat stand

But all humor aside, I think it's to the boats benefit to hit the water with a little forward momentum. Like Ron said, less stress on the drive train.

Rigger or not, You launch a boat and you get soaked, and you look at the driver and there smiling, You know they did it on porpose.

But if you do it to them, they get pissed.

All in fun, Just throw it off to your side and roost will just miss you.

I'll take launching a well tuned rigger over a surface drive mono ANY day. My hydros will pull off shore easily without having to mash the throttle. B)

I will say my old Roadrunner twin with the Picco EXR motors (poor low end torque) needed to hit the water with some R's going. Damn near had to pay guys to launch it. :D

Ya know, if I submarine a couple of launches, maybe they won't ask me again.

Submarining is always good, or in San Francisco it's like launching from a swimming pool, strsight off a cement sidewalk. Man throw it short and the ruddar and prop get tore up! B)

Hey, I swear it was an accident! ;)

Thanks guys, I feel much more confident about the lauching thing, but damn, I just gotta find the time. Hate walking past that bird as it sits on a bench at the workshop.
