Anyone here been through knee issues that the Dr poss suggested surgery ?

I hurt my knee a few weeks back and even though its feeling pretty good-

MRI shows - Large tear / medial meniscus and Strain of medial collateral Ligaments - swelling of Patella .

I honestly thought she was gonna clear me to go back to work ( Dish Field tech ) But she wants me to go to Ortho and possible surgery. I really dont want the down time of knee surgery , but at 47 years old / and the issues I have- the Dr insisted I follow up with it before I go back in the field.

Andy my friend, You might as well go ahead with the surgery and FOLLOW UP with the therapy. I never really injured either of my knees but at 65 the joints are wearing out. I may be looking at having BOTH knee joints replaced.

After 40+ years of dealing with a bum knee due to an injury & 3 surgeries, i prolly have some useful info. Be glad to fill you in - IF you would return my call.....btw, staring at replacment now.

Andy,

If you have to get fixed. TGH, Florida Orthopaedic Institute. Dr.Bernasek is the one that teaches usf. Did Deirdres knees. The tear is the healer, sounds like a mri, scope in your future. She had all that, plus close to bone on bone, had total replacement. You are a sports tune up right now.

Yeah the kicker is that it really doesnt hurt right now- The comp and Ins lady say thats cause Im not working on ladders and in attics all day.

Although that may be true, I dont want to go deep end and have surgery either.

Andy,

It's the old story. "PAY NOW OR PAY LATER" Get it done your young. My wife suffered with bad knee for 3 years. Just had it replaced. Now she kicking herself for waiting so long. Maybe yours would be orthoscopic???????

Just get it done IF the Dr thinks it's needed. Remember what you told me about my foot? No choice gotta do it. Though not the same the kicker here is YET, someday it will be. Don't F around with this. Heck I'm the one that has to put up with you imprisoned in the house LOL.

Andy,

Over the years starting when I was in my late 30's I have had 3 orthroscopic procedures and at 57 and 62 total knee replacements. The scopes are easy and work well. A tear won't heal, only gets worse and you'll cut more the longer you wait. Don't replace till your falling down would be my recommendation.

Have had two complete knee replacements, was told to have one done when I was 35 and waited until I was 58, that was a bad move on my part as the bone in both the upper and lower leg was so brittle the bone had to be cut down 1 1/2 inches on both the upper and lower bone and built up with epoxy, operation took 7 hrs, when they said I needed the second one done I had it done ASAP and had a lot less problems. Even the PT was easy.

+1 on surgery

I have had knee surgery for a meniscus tear and my orthopedic surgeon told me I didn't have to have the surgery and could function at 60 - 75% for a long time. However, the favoring of the leg would eventually cause my hips to shift and then I would develop lower back issues. He also pointed out that the surgery would not prevent arthritis from occurring in the knee naturally later on, but he guaranteed I would develop arthritis in the joint if it was left uncorrected. Post op therapy is obviously important in how quickly you recover and with anything medical, your results may vary.

Best of Luck!

I just dont get why it doesnt hurt ? sure for the first few weeks it was sore - but never really un tolerable

I understand its gotta be fixed if she is right in her diag that it is torn, But why dont I hurt ?

I thought FOR SURE , I was going back to work today.

Andy, A few years ago right around the time I attended one of the Fall Nat's, shortly after that my knee started aching something terrible. I attributed it to moving funny launching Bretts twin,, it eventually quit hurting bad, but still wasn't right,, just didn't hurt... Then about 3 months later the pain came back with a vengence,, MAN DID IT HURT!!! Went to an orthopedic had an MRI done and it was determined I had torn the miniscus (SP) had the orthoscopic surgery done (on a Thursday) by Sunday I was up/out and about working in the garage, back to work on Monday. IF your orthopedic knows anything, I'm sure they know what there talking about,,, do as advised by the Dr.

Andy, When I tore my right rotator cuff and split the upper bicep tendon (doing heavy incline bench) I was back in the gym the next week still pushing big weights (thought it was just a strain). The pain went away after a couple days of icing the area down BUT the damage was done. As others have posted ligament or tendon tears DO NOT HEAL ON THEIR OWN!! I had surgery on Dec. 18th and am still in therapy (thank God my P/T is a little hottie!

) but making excellent progress. If they recommend it then by all means GET IT DONE! The faster you get it repaired the faster you'll be on the road to recovery.

Andy, if it's just Arthroscopic, you'll only be down a few days to a week. Get it done on Friday and go back to work Monday. You'll be a little tender for a few days, but it's a lot better than replacement. I had a knee done about 15 years ago and the doctor did such a great job that I don't remember which knee it was. I walked into the surgicenter at 7:30 in the morning and I WALKED out about noon. I went home to wait for the anesthesia to wear off and then I went to the mall with my wife.

At this point I think it's the waiting three weeks to see the Orthopedist that's driving him crazy more than the idea of surgery. He needs a project to keep him busy or he may go crazy, or drive me crazy. LOL
