Hello, I'm building a trio of JAE .21 FE brushless riggers scaled down to 17" . I'm hunting for a good lipo/brushless setup with 15+ min runtimes under 40mph.

Running some setups through fecalc a good one came up with 17 minutes @ 36 mph with 3s1p 4000ma / x427 prop / a typical 28x35mm 2700kv inrunner motor.

Do these numbers sound fairly good to anyone? Should I aim for a hotter 24x40mm 3000kv+ motor?

scaled down to 17" you will have a hard time finding a 4000mah 3s pack that fits. i did all the calculations on a down scale jae .12 which came out to 60-70% 16-19" tub), this makes the tub 1&1/2" wide. still could only get 18-2200 mah. for a 380 sixe brushless all you are going to need is 1800 mah. you can get about 4-5 minutes out of them and they are so cheap you just carry 3 or 4 in your toolbox. anything bigger than that is going to not fit as well as sink your boat. besides a 427 prop will never push the weight of a 4000mah 3s pack. 15 minute run time out of a FE is unreasonable, most of my boats get around 4 minutes. as far as the motor, go with 28mm the 24mm is not a standard cooling jacket or mount size. also a great set-up can be seen in the minicatracingusa starship http://www.minicatracingusa.com/starship.html you will never be able to build a better rigger than this for the price, trust me i have tried. this is a great boat rtr in the 35-40 mph range. all it needs is the turn fin kit that they sell and 1800 3s packs.

Hi, I made a little one, Its 18 1/2 to end of boat, The tub is 2 1/16 wide. sponsons are 1 inch wide. Sorta based on the first jap plan. I just had to try the flat sided sponson thing and I had these parts around so this is the result. Inside is a mystery brand combo from e bay. 3850 KV Outrunner with a 30 amp spd controler. There about 25 shipped for the combo, sometimes much less if you look around. I run a 40c zippy 3s LiPo with 1050 mah, they go for about 15 bucks on e bay. Run time is maybe 4+ min?. But like chuck said batts are cheap and I do not use water cooling, Just a heat sink motor mount so it should be brought in to cool down every run. This thing is just too much fun. I run gas and nitro and this is my second fe boat and I am loving it. I always thought fe was high dollar stuff if you wanted to go fast but this just rips. I am sure it will do 40+, one of my best handling boats too. I want to make another one now with a tub that has room for a 4s LiPo, I think it would handle that? I run 427, 430 and cut 431 and 432 props. I have not found a best prop yet. It is a fun boat, I dont go to the pond without this one. Big THANKS to the Jap/ Jae designers. Mike M

Is that a Renegade Rigger tub you are using? (like the one in my avatar?)

The JAE reduced to 67% of the .12 plans makes the overall lenght at 16" tub width at 1 3/4", tub height is 1", and beam is 9 1/4, i am currently buildin one that size and droppin a Picco .06 turbo engine in it, the space is VERY tight!!!!!

i am collecting parts to make one that runs a seabee cox .049 it will be start and run wide open all the time.. i think i will be able to get it about 50% size of the .12 jae plans. i think the best way to size it up is to measure how wide i need the tub and play with the numbers from there

Hi Hotwater, Its my own tub I made it just big enough for my stuff, but I wish I would have made it bigger, Its hard to fit a receiver in. And I want to try 4s LiPo and it just wont fit. I was trying for real small and light but I went a bit to far on the small part. The tub is 14 3/4 long. The tiny nitro guys your building sound fun. Post the results. Mike M

Nice Mike! I like it! Have you tried any of the 380 Feigos in it (inrunners)? What kind of ESC is it...Watercooled? Also, after 4 min. of runtime, what temp are the batts and motor getting to?

-Kent

Thanks Kent, No I have only tried the motor it has in it. The esc is from mystery, so is the motor, Its a chinese brand name and you can find them on e bay. I have not shot my temp gun at it but The only time it was uncomfortable to touch was when I over proped it with a 432. With smaller props the spd con and motor are maybe 130 to 150 or so after a run. The spd con is not water cooled, I got them so cheap I just thought I would try it with out. I have seen this controller go for 8.95 shipped so if I fry it I just dont care that much. I got one to put in my micro scat cat and I have stressed it pretty hard and it has shut down on 4s when over propped but turned back on when it cooled?? Its done that twice but never fried. I will use the temp gun next time I go but that may be a while, lots of snow here now. Mike M

Appreciate all the info - I dropped the micro idea and am building some .12 jae's - the $$ to runtime ratio is so much better even if it's more hassle with nitro.

I know how you feel. Im waiting on the gas jae. Refuel, pull rope and drive. Nitro can be finicky.
