I have a Hughes JAE 45 turn fin, but it's undrilled. The Zippkit sponsons are also undrilled for the turn fin. Since I will be trying other turn fins, I wanted to use a common bolt spacing for the turn fin. Is the Preusse turn fin predrilled? If so, what is the spacing?

I was going to use four 6-32 machine screws. Does that sound adequate?

Thanks.

Craig, If you put the 2 fins together the Zip fin is 1/4 " shorter.
Yah, they look close in size; the Hughes 45 fin and the 21 Zippkit fin. I wonder if the Preusse fin is also similar in size?

Neil, How did you decide on bolt spacing? I suppose I could just use the same spacing as the .21 Zippkit fin. Probably not a big deal, as I'm sure you can get an undrilled Preusse fin if need be.

This is what I did on my Jae 45 usin Mike's fin .To get good results with the Hughe's fin make sure the bend lines are parallel with the botton of the tub otherwise it will affect the sponson attitude. After some test I replace the fin keeping it near the back boom and the boat runs in rails.

All I can say that is most important out of everything else you do is make sure you install wooden dowls and 6\32 inserts like shown in pictures from Gill. I had my turn fin rip of my sponson and lucky for me I had plenty of run off area in turn 1 at the races or I would have crashed my boat big time into the side of the lake. The riggers don't turn without a turn fin.

Since that near crash of my boat I have drilled holes in the sponson and dowel and put the 6/32 inserts in the dowels. I drilled the dowel inserts out first then epoxied the 6/32 into the dowl. Then the final step was epoxying the dowels into the sponson. I purchased the turn fin from David Pruse and it was too large it made the turning of the boat way to sensative for my driving skills. This winter I have already cut down the turn fin from David to about the size of a 21 JAE turn fin.

I don't think the holes line up from what I can remember between the 2 turn fins I have on hand but I have 2 sets of sponsons to play with so that is my .50 cents worth.

I drilled my Mike fin the same pattern as the .21 Zip fin so I can swap out if needed. Gil has a good ideals in the inserts.

Not to cut into your thread but since you guys are on the topic and i cannot seem to get Rod to answer my questions about the Jae's larger than 21's, Ill ask you guys. Do your JAE 45's pull to the right? are you cutting down the 45 fins to 21 size fins to accomodate this pull?

respectfully

To make sure my sponsons can hold the extra G's in turns I also reinforced the inside boom's support with pieces of 3/16 plywood as you can see in my website. Hugh you can toe in the right sponson in 1/8" to avoid the right pull...however my boat has both straigh sponsons and has no right pull that can be caused by a bad propellor.....remember the prop walk effect is inerent of our riggers.

We have had problems with the .12 pulling circles . What I found was one side of the sponson was off .I used a setup board and a piece of brass pipe to CK AoAOne sponson was off ,so I took off the botton and sanded the sides to match & a pair. .Do you turn the right sponson FRONT into the tub by 1/8" I also have moved the rear boom to the left. I loosened up my rear boom clamps and move

hope that helps

If you look at the JAE 45 plans the turn fin area gets wood blocks plus a1/4 "piece on the side. I drilled holes thru the 2 outside dowls and used 6/32 stainless bolts with blind nuts to beefup the turn fin mount.

Marty wrote a great article about boats pulling to the right because of the prop, I had the problem and his advice is dead on.
