Guys,

I have sponsons wider than the build had suggested and it's been working fine for a long time(I have been winning a lot of heats) so in an attempt to mess that up and try and go faster i am curious to know what you guys that have them and they are running well for you , what the stance is on your boats measured from the inside of the sponson to the outside of the tub.I am not really interested in the keyboard racers and what they may have heard works but people that actaully have hands on experience with the 21 jae or have friends that run them and win races.

My stance as i say is wide and maybe overkill so I am looking to narrow it up some and have heard that narrower is faster..Any truth to that ?

Terry

At some point it will be.

work on props

the time you spend there will be miles of gains compaired to the peanuts you will get by sponsons spacing

ok guys, that is a start what would the recommended spacing be.Good point Chris. I am running a bone stock 1450 S&B by me but have a few 21 rigger props i could try and have tried and it always looked like my boat with the 5 port(7 port soon) and the ops 3280 pipe likes the 1450 i did the best.

I am thinking a cupped up 1450 but hey i don't know enough about the prop tweaking to mess with them.I usually go stock and don't mess with props...I have the h4-h7 and a cut down 1450 but the day i messed with them i ended up back at the full size 1450 like i said.

Chris , i sent you a pm on a pipe suggestion.

lol

a 1450 full dia on a ops 3280 pipe at 3.4 - 3.75 cup is good 8 - 8 1/8

a cooper s pipe 7 7/8 with a 46.5mm 1450 @ 3.46 cup

( that combo run 78mph on my boat )

terry, my jae built straight by the instructions measures 7 3/16" tub side to inner sponson side. all 4 corners the same, no toe in or toe out. so far so good........

No it won't............

Thanks Rod, there are too many misconceptions out there being circulated, and after they are repeated enough times they become taken as fact when they are completely wrong. These misconceptions hurt a lot of boaters, especially the newer guys that are just getting started.

I am not trying to start an argument or step on anyones toes. Just making a true statement.

look at it this way.. wide fronts help you go faster in race water more stable.. keeping the front end planted. thus better perfomance in race trim

Only saying, why go wider than you have to? Once you find a sponson width that keeps the boat stable in race water, leave it. Any wider and it will be more difficult driving through traffic.

I must be dense....help me to understand....at what point does narrower become faster or guarantees you will get through "traffic better".........

Not only that, it looks goofy

Chase the rear end of anything around the course for awhile......trust me , it will become beautiful.......

Rod, Do you really not understand what I was getting at? Even if your boat is fast, you still have to pass slow boats when you lap them. I could be grossly wrong, but with my years of designing and building "full size" race cars, I have learned that there are always compromises.

O.K., let's get back on track. The original question was never answered. My JAE 21 has the stock sponson width of 20" overall. Should I go wider to 25", 30", 35", or 40"?

Thanks.

I totally understood what you were getting........ but........all obtuse remarks like "at some point narrower will be faster" does is introduce doubt into the JAE builders mind about boom tube spacing........

Good idea ...lets back on track.................the JAE.21G2 kit was released with 20" boom tubes.........we didn't do that because we tested and thought 25" boom tubes were better and faster for JAE builders ......

When we introduced the JAE by releasing plans and "RUNNING VIDEOS" we said first and foremost follow the instructions.Flush your mind with what you think you know about traditional riggers and build the boat by the plans.

The JAE team encourages testing and then the owner of the boat draws his/her own conclusions and report their findings.....

All JAE designs are "common sense" basic 8th grade science based designs that don't require a dozen shims, adjustable struts, different AOA's,etc, etc etc... to perform well.

Common sense conclusion.....The bigger [not just wider] the footprint the more stable the boat and the less fin you have to use to turn the boat...........but..........the compromise is...the farther the fin is placed to the right the more boat pull to the right the fin will introduce .......

Uncle Rod,

If I throw the book away with Kentley's picture on it and build it like I did an Avenger I had in '78 how fast will it go?
