I read awhile back someone was testing wire drives with the nitro .12's - has anyone had any success?

I'm wondering if with the ski covering all the way to the strut could the stuffing tube be shortened quite a bit and let it run free say half way back (I'm not using an S bend)

Drumzzzzzz, yes I have run wire drives in several on my 12 boats for years. Started with my SAW boats and have also set up my Sport 12 hydro and .12 mono with wires. I have had a lot of problems with them in the past (mainly in my SAW boats), but pretty much have them worked out now. The recent addition of the new Octura 5mm threaded collet (fits my Nova .12's) for 1/16 wire is a major help for those wanting to run wires.

I am curently building 2 of my Texan .12s...one with a single curve in the stuffing box to run wire and one with an S bend to run cable. I am anxious to see if there is any difference.

I would not recommend running an extended length of the wire out of the stuffing tube in your JAE...I think you will get to much whip. Some of the FE boats have run the wire without a stuffing box...I beleive they are successful because the motors are mounted far back in the hull and there is a fairly big bend in the wire and they are fairly short. This tends to hold the wire in shape and prevent the whip from developing. I am going to try this on my next SAW boat to see if it works and if there is any advantage.

Hope this helps,

Glenn

Appreciate the info - will definitely give the wire drives a try. I'm drawing up a semi straight with wire drive: 1/16 wire running 1/2 of the way through an 1/8" tube with 1/8"x1/4" ball bearings inside a 5/16" stuffing tube. Will lengthen it to prevent some whip.

What do you use for securing the propshaft? Would silversoldering temper the wire too much?

I make my own wires using 1/8 OD x 1/16 ID SS tubing silver soldered over the wire (the wire runs all the way through the stub shaft).

will give the silversolder a try. Do you step up the stubshaft with 3/16 tube for strength and larger props too? or is the 1/8 ss tube strong enough?

I forgot that the wire run all the way adds quite a bit of strength too.

I drew up a Jae themed rigger with the shortened stuff tube. both the stuff tube and strut have 1/8 id x .187 od bearings, does that look like it will still have too much whip? (sorry about the crappy pic)

I'm curious how easy something like this might spin compared to flex shafts - small ball bearings could even be used!
