How much do these things cost?? Building a six cell boat for the grand kids and electric is pretty foreigh to me. This guy says I need one to keep the motor cool.

Help appreciated Curt

I always run water cooling on my motors...most setups are for racing though.

Some aluminum tubing wound around the can always helps to flow some H2O.

I have no idea what kind of cooler your friend wants to sell you.

Heat is the killer in both gas/nitro and electrics. It is best to cool your speed controller and your motor.

The LightSpeed coolers are well-made, but they are not very efficient at cooling the motor. Their only point of contact is the PTO end of the can; a wrap-around cooler would be better if you have room for it. Where the LS cooler shines is in boats which cannot acommodate the cooling coils. For those boats it is a good choice; I do not know if it is still made.

Ok, well I have a water cooled jeti 60 amp speed controller, and a choice of a couple of motors, trinity and reedy. Could a person use both the coiled cooler and the litespeed or would that be too much trouble?

I am going to use a 34 inch titan I have that has never been drilled. I have nitro hardware for it so would I still be able to use the speedmaster stuff I have and maybe use the lighter aeromarine tabs?

Regards Curt

Oh, thanks a bunch for the info fellas!!!!

Uhoh !!! Did you say you wanted to use a Trinity or Ready motor in that boat ? Than I suspect you are talking about 05 sized motors. If that is the case I highly recomend against it.Those motors are way underpowered for a 34"anything.

Even with a gear reduction. The cheapest set up that I am aware of would be a 700 sized motor on a turbo tranny with about 1.3 to1.5 gear reduction and a 45 to 47mm prop.

700 motor 50.00 to 60.00

Transmission 70.00

12 cells 2 6 cell packs laid down on each side along the CG

A good brushed speedo rated at 14 volts and about 40 to 60 amps

Your hardware will work fine.

There are afew venders that have oodles of experience with that size hull and can put you dead on exactly what you need with out blowing bundles of "might work cash"

Well, ok I also have a 29 inch epoxy mono made by Maus with hatch. Would that be better? Use the speedmaster hardware and aero tabs.

Curt

If I read you right, you want to build a 6-cell, 34" mono for the kids. This will be a slow boat no matter what motor you use, it is just too big for 6 cells. It is really pretty large for 12 cells but Dennis' suggestions would be the best for that boat and kids. Even the 29" boat is too big to plane effectively on 6 cells, but perfect for sport running on 12 cells. :)

Now if all you want is a boat to tool around the pond off plane, then 6 cells can be made to work, at 8-10 mph. But if you want something more interesting, it will take a minimum of 12 cells to get there. If you want to use 6 cells and an 05 motor for the kids, you'd be ahead using a smaller boat in the 20-24" range. B)

Ok, well will try again I bid on a hughey 2 motor geared system on ebay. It has 2 trinity sapphire motors and is geared 1/1.98 gear ratio. Has 2 cooling systems I think they are the lightspeeds also. What boat will this unit power??

Curt

Again, tnks for the good info, keep me going in the right direction. I have been around rc boating nitro/gas for 24 yrs now but electric is new to me.

The Hughey set up would work but the maintenance is gonna keep you BZ.Best spend your money on the 700 and the tranny. You can get them at www.finedesignracing.com.And vertually no maintenace.Just charge your cells and play.We use these boats all the time for racing and sport. So we have explored all of the power options for both the 29 and the Tian 40.The homework has already been done. You will get tons of play time for your investment.

Or like Jay said.Just put all that eqipment you have in a 20 to 24" boat and you can have the same low maintinance fun.

Dennis is right. You will be sorry with dual 05's and a boat that size. Just too much upkeep.

What is the upkeep about?? It is 2 motors driving one flexshaft using a gearsystem at a ratio of 1/1.95? Is it the poor quality of the gears in the hughey, or anything else?????

Curt

Its the motors themselves. They need to be rebuilt often. The hughey gears are good for this and the system will run good. But you will have to cut the comms on the motors often.

Ok! tnks now it sinks in. So how often on the rebuild?

Is there a better moter this size that will last longer?

What is "cut the comm" is that the commontator? Is that a big deal?

They are adjustable timing motors will setting them appropriately help?

Will the larger 700 size motors work better if I wear these out?

knowing what I am looking at, what speeds for the 40 titan

and what speeds for the 29 Maus? Also parallel or series? Will these motors handle 7.2 volts and would that be better?

Regards Curt

Check out our new GrimRacer water cooling jacket. It is super efficient and will fit cans between 36 - 45mm.

It will be available late August.

Thanks,
