I bought a really cool looking Orlic 12 carbon rigger and want to learn how to set it up! Where can I learn about attack angles and how to set it up so I can have it on the water next year? Any direction will be appreciated, thanks Kevin ....

Kevin, google. Or here on this forum in the outrigger section. basically, lots of testing. make a few sets of sponsons with different AOA and find what works best for you, and your setup. 3.5-5.5 on the sponsons and 2-3 on the ski.

I started at 4.5 on my 21 rigger, as the speed increased, so did the lift generated, and it became unstable and wanting to blow off. I ended up around 3.5* AOA on the front sponsons, and 2.5* on the ski, and its pretty stable now.

Look at or print the JAE 12 plans.. Make the footprint of your boat the same as that, tub height, sponson with, ski width, and AOA on both.. You will be a happy camper i can gaurentee it !

^^ There you go. I seen Martin's 12 boat in action. Ballistic.

Thanks Martin, did you ever get your 21 Orlic going?!?! I will give that a try also. I was hoping to get some of the characteristics of the riggers and why they do what also. Kinda like Rodney was saying as far as his attack angle and to much lift. Do you fellas have any other important need to know items I should look into or I should search for?

Thanks again guys!

Kevin, AOA is best understood (in simple terms) to be the more AOA you have on the bottom of the sponson, the looser the front of the boat will ride on the water. IE: the more lift generated. Now, there is also the top of the sponson to deal with, which can also add or neutralize the aerodynamic lift. BUT, if you use a basic JAE profile, the steeper the AOA, the looser and more lift will be generated by the front sponsons.

If you want to really get your head mixed up, search on google for aerodynamics and angle of attack. You will find a TON of info. Enough to make your head spin.

Kevin, find the meanest, sexiest woman that you can find and marry her.

Then you will get some idea of what it is like to run a rigger.

Sometimes it is pure joy and sometimes it is as frustrating as anything that you have ever came across.

very "truex" :) and agreed...my new Fe boat is a jae based rigger and what can I say is........thanks Jae's team ! Gill

My thoughts are about footprint, AOA and CG. You need a certain relationship between the sponson trailing edge, the strut and the CG. About 60% weight on sponsons will get you close. Too little weight on the strut and the prop will lift out of the water too easily, too much on the fronts and the boat will be hard to launch and maybe slow. the JAE is a darn good place to start,.. some guys don't like the big TF needed with no non-trip on the sponsons.

Kevin,

Great to hear you got a rigger! My Dad and I are down at the eagan pond all the time during the summer and would be glad to help you get it going. Feel free to PM me thru the site if you need help or want to set up times to meet up at the pond in the spring.

Thanks Greg,, I will take all the help I can get! Hopefully I can make it to more then one race this coming season.

kevin, look at the keps .21 plans freebie thread, & go to niklas edlund's blogspot. awesome little pdf you can print out for checking & measuring aoa. has to be the easiest way i've seen yet ;) ! heck, a ton of good info on his site, not just that.
