Head clearance dial indicator

how does this thing work? looks like a very old unit. does anyone use solder anymore.....

What you do is take the head button off take the indicator use one of the sides of the base of indicator the plunger sits on the outer edge set the dial to zero now take your engine making sure the sleeve is held down so it cant move up put the plunger on the outer edge of piston turn the motor over watching the indicator the highest reading will be the clearance difference it could be minus or positive depending on shims or head button.The indicator does look old but works good better then most of the cheap overseas kind.This is a no guessing way to check the clearance easier then a depth gage

I've never got the same measurement twice in a row with solder. Age of a indicator does not reflect condition- How it's taken care of means everything. I've had some that were VERY old and still worked very well. Any questions-you can get my ph.# from Tony C. and give me a call.Glenn Gates
