I want to make a cowl. im thinking about using 6.0 oz loose weave cloth. will this be suitable or not. if not, whats the best thing to use. All input is appreciated.

Are you talk about MAT? I don't know weights in ounces but I think that would do great. Make sure you wet it out good, then roll all the extra resin out. Vac bagging is the best for making parts light and strong. Do you have a mold? You guys have access to so many cool composites, you could try a Carbon Kevlar weave and you wouldn't have to paint it.

I have been doing the following:

brush on a thin layer of West System Epoxy, fast set. Wait for it to tack up.

Lay on a 3oz cloth, followed by a 6oz cloth. Two 6oz will work too.

Good luck!

Here are a couple of ideas.

Wax and PVA the mold then spray with paint or primer, this will give you a nice finish without pinholes and will be finished or ready to paint out of the mold.

Fill in the sharp corners with a epoxy and silica mix.

Here is a pic of a cowl I made. I sprayed the mold with single stage auto paint first and let it dry. Next a light coat of epoxy and let it get sticky then layed a light fiberglass layer first. Second layer is CF. The carbon will help keep the cowl stiff and hold it's shape. With out the carbon you will need more layers of glass.

Third after the carbon another layer of a glass cloth.
