I have a few scratches and chips in the gel coat of a fiberglass hull. The hull is not painted but has the original while gel coat. I am too lazy to fill with Bondo, then primer and spray.

I have seen these Gel coat repair kits at West Marine and sometimes even at Walmart. It is basically a polyester gel resin with tubes of different tints to match the color. To repair cracked gel coat, you mix the resin with color tint. Then lay the resin in the cracked area and cover it with clear cellophane until the resine cures. Has anyone used these before? Can they fill the cracked gel coat and be buffed to the original shine?

Thanks,

kez

Cracks & scratches are 2 different things

If you have cracks in your gel, they will continue to crack, unless they are properly repaired.

If they are only scratches in the gel, yes the gel repair kit is what your after. Not quit a simple as mixing and putting cellophane over till dry.

Best results are build it up with more than level gel patch, sand down to about 800GRT sand paper, then buff to desired shine

just repaired my red metalflake with white bottom seducer, with one of the gelcote repair kits. boat had prop tracks on the corner of the top and the upper edge of the white. it doesn't look new, but i thought it came out very well. put some parma (i think) metalflake in the red to match the top.it didn't come out as good as the white, but it will do,for a race boat. i used some rubbing compound and it shines it up.all depends on how much work you want to do

Hi GSB,

I have chipout (the gel coat missing in chunks) and hairline crack, which I opened up and plan to fill. Actually I planned to build it up higher then sand it down.

Hi Steve,

Can you tell me what brand Gel coat repair kit you bought? Since you have used it successfully I want to get the same stuff. Can you post a picture of the repair job? Did you sand it flush and then buff it out?

Thanks.
