First Gas Boat Question

OK so i've tried Gas boats..... But I keep breaking the starting rope. I broke so many I gave up. I tried the ez start thing.... short fast pulls.... still break them. I gave up and sold the motor. I still have the rigger.....

Any suggestions?

I need a new engine.... that's easy to start!

Anyone have an engine cheap that I could get?

I heard of people useing para cord. I also know there are different quality ez starts setups. One of the better being the one they offer at zippkits, one of the weaker I heard is the rev-unlimited. I have noticed differences between the 2. Material and cord diameter...once you get the starter issues resolved, the rest of running gas is a breeze... Thumb over the intake port a few pulls until it pops, and 99% of the time, one more pull, no choke, it's fired.

They sell Kevlar, and para cord at rock climbing supply stores.. I'm sure you can find it online.

Get a front pulley to use your electric starter, the belt comes off after starting it.

If your breaking ropes all the time your doing something wrong. How many times are you pulling to make it start? If your pulling and pulling to get it to fire the rope will break, but it should only take a couple pulls.

Tom, too bad you could not ask that question before you sold the cc mod engine.

I do wonder though. Maybe there is a gas expert here that can answer this quetion. Why did Tom break every starter he tried?

John and I are not gas guru's, but we have run a number of different engines over the years, including JG, Mathe, QD, Zenoah, and Tiger King. Used whatever starter came on the engine except for the TK we installed an EZ start purchased from John Otto. (I did not know there are different brands of EZ Starts). Anyway, we never broke a starter or rope, so what would cause someone to break so many that they give up on gas boating before even getting started?

Yea You shouldnt need to pull the rope too many time to start. Makes you you choke by pulling rope until your finger over the carb gets wet, than take your finger off and pull a few more time with throttle open at high idle. If that isn't working for you tune up time because ropes should not break on an ez start

We use Geezer wheels as backup to our ez starts in case a rope does break. We've been pretty lucky so far. They do seem to break when needed most, YOUR ON THE CLOCK.

Amazing! In several years of racing gas boats, I've only broken one starter rope. I started using EZ Starters on most of my boats last year, and haven't broken one of them yet, either. Typically a couple of easy pulls with your finger covering the carb mouth to prime the engine and then another good yank or two and Vrooom, she starts right up. Of course your carb settings have to be dialed in. A good starting place on a Zen260 w/wt257 is 1 high / 2 low.

Id say 50 or more pulls each time id start it.

Wow... Something was definitely wrong. Are you 100% sure it was an ez start system? There are 2 types of pull starts on these engines. You really can't tell the difference between the 2 when mounted on the engine. The ez start has a sort of spring load assist... When pulling, it takes what feels like 50% of the compression out of the equation.. The standard pull starter, is more of a "direct drive" setup. Looking at the motor, with the starter mounted, you wouldnt know the difference.
