OK i didnt get any response to "running FE tunnels in salt water" so i guess the experiment is going to be all me. i am collecting parts to start my FE build. i got a OSSI hull, it looks like it has plenty of room for a large radio box, low COG and lots of flotation. here is what i plan to do with it. UL-1 motor on REK leg, 120a esc and 5000mah 30c 4s. my questions are:

1) what is a rule of thumb for creating COG on tunnels? i know monos run around 30% but i need a starting point for the tunnel, most of my nitro ones are around 27-28% (8" from the trandsome on 29" cobra/ts2 7" on 26" htb/leecraft). should the COG be the same ball park for FE?

2)looking for info on building a cowling to inclose the motor and make water tight. i didnt find any info on the conductivity of salt water and brushless motors so i am going to try and keep it as dry as possable. i know i have sunk FE's and not had a problem blowing esc's but then again i have had them burst into flames when the esc gets wet. the super-v with the sealed esc and open motor didnt give any problems when dunked. i hate to waste expensive esc's so i am thinking of making a cowling for the motor to try and keep as much water out as possable..... i see some of you have made them for a scale look and want tips..

thanks, it will be a few weeks before any real assembley is started but i will post pics and info for anyone interested in trying a saltwater one..

What is an OSSI hull?

As for CoG start around 30%

Sorry I didn't reply to your question, I don't run in Salt water.

IF I absolutely had to, I would get a hold of a DPI cowl from someone (i think someone here was going to make some molds of it) and completely seal the motor off.

Currently in the fresh water (sometimes brachish) after I run the boat I take the motor off, then put it in a bath of metho (denaturated alchohol) for a bit then remove it, drain the metho and re oil the bearings. Seems to work OK.

Other spray the insides with corrosion X if they run in salt water then wash down after running and re cover in corrosion X.

Hope this helps!

Ronald, those boats are AWSOME, but I think Chuck has a small thing that I have not seen before...He posted apic of it somehwere, but I cannot find it now.

that is the manufacture. it is designed as a inboard with inline strut and rudder. i have all the hardware and it is kind of on the back burner right now. i will probablly put something like the ul-1 setup in it. the problem is the trandsom. it is angled and the inline strut/rudder i have will not sit like the one in the picture, the water will come off the pror right into the steering linkage.. i need to build a shim to take some of the angle out of the trandsom. i have one cut just need to put some time into building it and i have 4 riggers in progress, a leecraft that needs to go to dry dock and a cobra that i am thinking about separating the hull and deck to strengthen. i have boxes of novarossi's, esc's, hardware and other stuff and just not enough time to work on this one. once i get my riggers build i will probablly get back on this one.
