Epoxy clear over rattle can finish?

All,

I am wondering if anyone has any luck with rattle can spray paint and then clear coat over it for fuel protection. If so, what spray paint is compatible with Klass Kote clear? Enamel or lacquer? Any particular brand? Tremclad? Rustoleum?

I do not mind the slight yellowing of epoxy clear with age. And I have had good results with epoxy paints from Hobbypoxy to Superpoxy to Klass Kote.

I know from past experience that House of Kolor Kandies and Klass Kote clear are not compatible. After about a week the clear started to lift, and you could peel it off like a layer of cellophane.

The Rattle Can Rustoleum Basic Colors work very good with Clear Coat 2k Glamor Two Part Rattle Can. Must let Rustoleum paint dry good for several weeks up to a month before you can Clear Coat. My friend did a basic Rustoleum white on outrigger sponsons & lids. No Clear Coat. He let it dry way over a month & dumped some 60% nitro fuel on the white radio & bait box lids & the fuel didn't hurt the Rustoleum paint. You must scuff the paint before you Clear Coat with 2k Glamor,when this stuff drys you will have a hard coat shell & cleaning is easy,the nitro slides right off the Clear Coat.

We use automotive 2-part clear over pretty much everything (rattle can, HoK, Imron) and it seems to work fine with all of them. I can’t tell you it’s 100% fuel proof but it won’t dull or craze if you accidentally spill some on it and wipe it off.

i have used rustoleum paint mixed with about 10% of valspar enamel hardener which reduces drying time , gives a better shine , and hardens the finish

I use the MAX 2K rattle can Epoxy on several of my boats it is $$$ but if U have a few parts ready to clear its worth the cost and not running Ur expensive spray guns .

Goes on really nicely and flows to a glass smooth finish dust free in abt 20 min. pot life is 24 hrs once activated in the can. Totally fuel proof even with 65% nitro, Best price Ive found is on Amazon in 4 pack can box

Thanks all for your replies. Each time I use my touch up gun, I need to spray about a quart of thinner to clean out the gun. Then I need to strip it down for more cleaning. Not to mention the amount of thinner that I need to get rid of later. If I can get a good finish with clear over spray paint that would save a lot of time and elbow grease.

Joel, I will try it on a 21 tunnel first. An outboard is less likely to get raw fuel spilled on it.

Jim, Imron should be very fuel proof. I am sure automotive 2-part clear would work.

Bob, adding an enamel hardener is an interesting idea. I never thought of that before. But then that would defeat the purpose of using Rustoleum as I want to buy the spray can without having to mix the paint and use my spray gun

If you are going to clear with klass kote don’t spray it over enamel. Klass Kote is epoxy, but it is reduced with lacquer thinner. Not sure why it didn’t play well with the HOK kandies, as HOK paints at that time could be top coated with lacquer or urethane.

Another vote for Max Glamour Gloss. Have used it on several different projects with different paints and always comes out very nice. SprayMax has a epoxy filler primer Ratcan. Safe to guess that they would anticipate one spraying the clear gloss right over top with no prior knowledge.

If your using the MaxSpray product I would have atleast 3 cans at the ready...the 21 rigger I would allocate a can to that alone....remember....the 2part or 2K is a can within a can....so the activator is inside and occupies space...example....I finished a zippkits crackerbox and used 2 cans and not spraying the bottom... wishing I had another...the boat is 43" long

My local auto paint supplier charges me $29/can...
Eastwood company also sells there version for about the same price..I spoke to a tech at the company and was comparing Spraymax to there version and they were saying it virtually identical product...but i didn't try it yet..

You will need two cans for that hydroplane.
