Why would you want 5in spacing for engine rails in wooden sport 40 boat? Seems like 4 would be plenty wide enough and leave more room on the sides for fuel tanks,..

If you're running an engine with a 180 header, the added room could make the difference between having the pipe run under the deck, over the deck or under the cowl and in the engine bay. If the engine has the exhaust over the flywheel or you already plan to run an exposed pipe, it doesn't really matter.

Just for an example, I built a 73 Pak in 20 size with a 4" engine bay. Using a NR21 with a 180 header, the engine had to be offset roughly .25" to allow the pipe to be in the engine bay and not interfere with the carb
