Has anyone replace the stock ignition system in a Zen. Was wondering if I can get nat review on Power-Spark, Rexel and Thunderbolt.

Thanks

Ken

I've got one setup but it's missing the sensor bracket so I haven't tried it yet.

www.modelgasboats.com has a review on I think the Power Spark system. I was not only looking at the stronger spark but the weight savings from removing the stock ignition sytem but then there will be the weight of the system and extra battery aboard so it's about even in the end.

Daniel Place did some work with one, hopefully he'll chime in. He's got a video that shows the huge difference between stock and his setup.

Thanks Ron, looks to me like the Power-Spark is the most advanced. I have 260 PUM in an SG and the engine pulses at high speed. I believe the boat/motor combination is causing dynamic resonance leading to ignition intermittence. I hope ESI will solve the problem.

Ken,

The Power Spark is a awesome ignition system. It is also a very accurate tach and a ignition kill failsafe amongst a whole slew of other things it can do. There are many parameters that have great uses for us boaters.

I have had mine for a year or so and while I do not run the boat a whole lot it has functioned flawlessly every time.

You can't go wrong with this system if you are looking to go with a battery powered electronic ignition.

Ken, the Power Spark is truly remarkable on SO MANY levels. And the weight saving is there. There's no need for separate battery, as the system is designed for 4.8 to 12 V. You can use a 12 V with a tiny voltage regulator for your radio system if you like, but you don't need 2 battery packs aboard.

However, what you describe can probably be fixed with a plug gap of .015", and a check to make sure you have adequate source coil to flywheel clearance. Also make sure your secondary coil is POSITIVELY grounded to the motor ( they aren't always ). Sometimes a slight tweak on the carb high needle can help.

The Power Spark is tremendous, but I'm not sure you NEED it for a cure.

We tested the Quickdraw electronic ignition system on a Zenoah years ago. There was no improvement over the stock system in power, but there was a weight saving. It's hard to beat the cost and convenience of the stock system.

I believe the Power Spark system will fire the plug in more difficult situations. In most setups I doubt if fancy ignitions will result in more power with a NAMBA G class modified Zenoah. If you plan to increase the compression ratio, play with the chamber shape, or run a surface discharge plug, a better ignition system will be needed. That can't be done in a NAMBA G class engine.
