When mounting the electric motor in a vertical position is a thrust bearing required between the shaft coupler and the front bearing or bushing of the motor ? Regards Andris Golts.

Hey,

No it isnt required between the coupler and motor...the thrust is taken at the drive dog (the washer between drive dog and bearing housing which screws into lower unit)

Cheers

Kris is correct, it isnt required, but i found that i onlf got 6moths from the motor bearing in a nemisis XL motor when there was no thrust bearing. I now run one and i has been 12months since i have replaced the bearings. My maintaince is still the same WD40 or CRC in the motor and leave it then contact cleaner after each days running.

Maybe i just got some better bearings or something. For the sake of $10 its cheap maintaince

what are you guys using to hook the motor to the prop shaft

any pictures an part # where to get them gears what size of motors

thank you

Marty

You need to get a shaft to flex adapter. You can get them from fullers for $15 bucks. Here is a picture of the one I have. You can see the two set-screws used to tighten the adapter on the motor shaft, and the other end has a square hole for the flex shaft to slip into. Never mind the writing in the photo, it was for someone else.

My setup is the same, but with a lawless lower unit and home made legs and motor bracket. I just use a flex hex and have had no trouble with it on the square end of the shaft. I do have a fair bit of the shaft inside the coupler. Doent vibrate at all.

If you really want to see a hot modification done to an outboard then perhaps Kris might post his mod lawless lower unit.
