Has anyone trimmed off the ears or wings off of the rear of a hawk and if so is there anything else ide need to do to trim them off.I have one Im redoing and would like to remove them and run Speedmaster hardware not marine spec like the instructions suggest.Seems with them on it interferes with the Speemaster rudder. Thanks

I wouldn't take them off. On the rudder bracket, do not mount it on the transom, good way to rip off your transom off if you hit something. Cut off the L braket so you only have one piece, the piece the rudder bolts on & mount it on the right or left ear, (your choice) this will give you a more strong mount. If you like ,I can take pic and e maill it to you if you are not clear on what I mean. Akso do not mount the motor as per instructions on kit, they are for a K&B 21. mount motor as far forward as possible (use motor you are using for guide.)

Gary Preusse can mail you changes he makes different from the Dumas intructions 630-279-2451.

As Bill stated the tabs do have some advantages..and do work well but your right, not with the SM hardware. I have also seen hawks that have the rudder holes ripped out the way the kit is designed. When you hit sompthing the two holes that bolt the rudder to the ear are all that are there and you can clean pull a bolt through the wood. In eather case i shear bolt is a not only a good idea but nessary.

I like the rudder that dumas recomends but it needs a ton of work to make the boat handle well. (chop the tar out of the size of the thing).

Keep us posted.

I have a question too. Is a 7.5cc engine too big for a 3.5 Hawk? I saw one for sale and wanted to know if it would work.

Thanks, Dale P.

To the original question guy(Keelibear)

Cut the "winglets" off they serve no purpose, are just added weight at the rear of the boat and they will split the tub lengthwise in a high speed dump.Go with Bill's(Speedmaster) hardware, but make sure you use a brass bolt on the rudder bracket for breakaway purposes. As far as engine mounting(turn around engine/Nova) the backplate should be about 1/2 inch behind the rear boom block.

RC boatlover guy,

Yes the 45 will fit,but you need to widen the foot print and fuel consumpion is a problem depending on your set up.Also the factory turn fin spar is AWFUL and needs to be changed regardless of what engine your running(21 or 45).Gary has the carbon spars in stock.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunatly the auction I was watching ended earily. I had my eye on it for four days but the seller must have gotten a good offer and sold it before I could buy it.

3.5 Hawk with 7.5cc engine

Thanks again, Dale P.

he did you a favor...... that is not a hawk!

if you want a nice hawk i have one for sale

I use two blind nuts to secure bolts to the winglets. Haven't ripped them out yet.

Knock on wood

What I really wanted was the engine and pipe!

Toss the radio, keep the starter for a spare, Put the engine and pipe in my hydro and keep the hull to mess around with once and a while.

But you say it's not a Hawk? What was it?

Is your Hawk a 3.5 or 7.5? I have a OS .46 VXM that won't fit in my hydro because there isn't enough room for the 180* header. But it will fit in a outrigger!

Thanks, Dale P.

I really want something that I can put my 7.5cc engine in. I would take it if it was the larger hawk. I'll keep it in mind though.

Thanks, Dale P.
