I would like to have sort of design team to work together and develop some more high performance hulls that are very easy to build. I was thinking about it on the plane today..

A group of people, maybe have a net meeting 2-3x / month. I would like to get some good designers and builders together and design a sport hydro and a rigger,,. that is super easy to build but runs as well as the high dollar boats. I can be the designer / cad guy. We would review the designs for a while,.. couple months.. then we could all get kits laser cut at the same time and test,..

Kind of an Iwaters SkunkWorks,..

Anyone interested in working together on a project like this.. I don't know if there is really much to do on a rigger.. but I'm sure we can do some sport boat work,.. focus on quick build, modern running surface geometry,.. venting,.. CG,.. WOF maybe,.. build methods..

I found that in my club here in Charlotte that no one is really interested in building hulls,.. it's mainly a RTR FE club and they hop up the boats.. which is fine.. just I like to do other things also..

This sounds very interesting. I would like to be on this team. I could CNC program the molds and do it in a composite fiberglass. I have 4 CNC mills at my finger tips.

awesome Doug,.. lets get 4-5 guys together.. see who wants to join,.. and Ill schedule some net meetings to start.. Great to have guys with some good history in on the project... I was thinking more about wooden kits but hey,.. if you can make the molds that is fantastic. Less building equals quicker to the lake and testing!!!

Who else would like to contribute?

My latest Sport 20 is fairly basic. Wood center section and foam sponsons. I need to build another one since I sold this one. Would be glad to send the basic "shop drawings" to someone with the capability of converting them to CAD.

Jerry

ahh I have been searching the web on topics relating to areo/hydro dynamics & wing in ground effects in view to sport hydro's for clues . the hydro race boat museum has some blogs of theories and findings on their site to which will help you .

was thinking about getting some books etc from them . but as its said its a lot of trial and error due to the many variables on water.

JD,.. in my opinion basic is very good. I think we can manage to get your boat in cad. The SP21 I just did is similar,.. though I didn't know it till I saw these pics.. Are you interested in being part of our group?

I would be interested in participating in this project. I am much more a builder than a design theorist.

JD

once the group is confirmed we can confirm the first project. A sp21 would be good. I have new design that could be used as a starting point,.. and incorporate JD and Dougs thoughts.. I'm done traveling for a while. We can get started soon.

Soon it will be!!! Jerry are you looking for fiberglass or wood hull ? I like what I see, Great looking hull.

Doug Shepherd

Doug are you thinking to do a wooden or fiberglass hull? If you have the cnc equipment maybe we do fiber glass. But that would be more work on your part for sure. Even if it's just the 3 of us I want to do it. So start thinking! We can do a sp21 and a sp40. The only real things that I want to push are high performance and really good design for assembly. You two I'm sure can provide input on design very well. Tomorrow I will send you both a link to my web conferencing and the login. Well set a time and start a list of details. Please begins to think about things like

Sponson aoa

Sponson top angle for down force, maybe a bit more angle on top of the left as to counter torque at speed

Venting on the bottom, where to vent in relation to sponson heel

Flat surfaces and or overhangs

Engine rails or floor mount, I like the rails and the super mount from zipp. Real easy and cheap. But of course we can discuss

Maybe first wood boats and Doug can cut a tool for some really fancy or different than normal cowls

Maybe and open tub and adjustable sponson height and angle, maybe 3 fasteners to mount to the tub. Ok maybe that's a bit crazy. But,..

After plane length

Sponson width and running surface length

CG location relative to sponson heal.

Different ways to build sponsons, faster, simpler build methods,

Please add to the list and we will make some decisions on each item and I will begin to put this model together. We can use the one I have now as a base if you want. I'll show you all the cad models in our meeting.

A bit of thought on riggers. I would like to have a 21 rigger that is bigger than the average 21 but just as similar weight in an effort to solve the rough water issues. Love 21 riggers but would like better rough water performance.

Materials? Lamination????? New concept?

I have some ideas on this. Materials are a large part of it.
32-33" hulls would be the best size to work with any bigger will see you loose benefits of engines props. etc . very difficult to to get a good compromise of two things handle rough water & be fast. the mongoose designs & SGX CMDI i would consider had the right balance for heat racing.what will the next latest and greatest of boats after the jae.

Conference call info sent to interested parties. If you did not receive an IM and want to participate let me know.

first call probably this weekend. Right now I plan on discussing a sp21 nitro boat, using the design I currently have as a baseline,.. If you would like to add a topic for this call please post..

JD, I like the sponson build method you have. I wonder if it would be difficult to incorporate the step from the beginning.. and maybe some more curvature on top.. want to talk more about that method,.. could be simple and very fast..

Just my 2 cents but I think there would be more interest in Sport 40 and riggers then a sport 20. Why not start there. There are way more Sport 40 entry's then Sport 20's atleast in our area. Compare 25 sport 40's to only maybe 5 sport 20 entries. Maybe it's the availability. Seeing a boat other then a Phil Thomas is always nice to see also.
