Getting about that time again

Dont know why but this time of year always reminds me Dale aint with us anymore, maybe because he won more races at Daytona than any racer in the history of the Speedway, maybe cause I was always a huge fan. Loved him or hated him - he was - The Man...........

You going to make me cry

I hear ya, its amazing how someone I never met in person had such a strong influence on me. When I first started watching Cup back in the mid 80's - I immediately liked Dale. I was a die hard Open wheel fan- Indycar and F-1 prior to that and after Senna died , I didnt really want to watch Open wheel any more, Im pretty sure it was a Memorial Day weekend that got me watching Cup hardcore. There where many many years in a row I didnt miss a lap of any race - seasons on end , now - not so much. I didnt even want to watch Nascar for a long while after Dale was gone, but I can never miss watching the Daytona 500 - its a special race, I have been to the speedway many times for the 24hrs - 500 - 400 - bikes and karts - its a very special place.

But I will never forget where I was the day we lost a legend...............

I was there, high just past turn 2 just before the end of the extra asphalt. a long way across to turn 4, but the hit didn't look exceptionaly bad. i always parked across the street at the airport. when i left that day, the road in front of the speedway was blocked. never happened before, knew something wasn't right. radio coverage was silent about it for a long tiime. i didn't hear until i got to jacksonville on I-95. as good as they came, not the same without him.

It looked like just another hit , that he had taken time and time again- hell the Talladega deal on the roof upside down and Elliott T-boning the windshield scared me worse than that. It was Schrader's reaction when he got to Dale's car that I KNEW it was bad.

On a lighter note- CARS ARE ON THE TRACK RIGHT NOW- 2014 Season has begun ..................

One of my favorite memories of all time about Dale was right after that wreck- he drove Watkins Glenn - with a broken collar bone and sternum -AND put it on the pole with a track record

He was supposed to get out of the car during the first caution , when he didnt pit Childress threw a chit fit- Dale went on to lead the most laps and only at the end did he fall to a top 5 finish.

Whats yours ??

What if I don't have one, Andy?

NASCAR has never been a big thing for me, unlike the unlimited races every summer. Give me four or five boats doing 200 with water 30ft in the air and I'm happy all weekend long

I remember my son and I were going back to our car after one of the Richmond races ( I live about 2 miles from the track ) and we were just outside of the fence to the helipad watching who was getting on the helicopters to go to the Richmond airport. We were standing behind a pickup truck that was parked next to the fence and all of a sudden this guy runs right in front of us, jumps on the bumper of the truck and over the fence. It was Earnhardt. We saw him run to a helicopter and get on with Teresa and daughter Taylor. I might be mistaken, but I think it was the race that Dale, Jr. won, and because he made an appearance in Victory Lane, that's why he was late getting to the helicopter. If I had stuck my foot out I could have tripped him up before he got to the truck.............he was that close. My son and I both liked Dale. Most of his R/C cars were # 3. He still has a 6 cell R/C truck hanging on his wall in his bedroom painted orange with the Wheaties logo. After he died in 2001 it was quite a site to see all of the fans standing on the 3rd lap of the race with 3 fingers in the air.............don't think that will happen for anyone else.
