Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found

over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there

was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird

Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to

everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT

Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying
colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By
analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the
crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were
killed by an impact with a car.

MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if
there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck
kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause:
when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a
nearby tree to warn of impending danger. They discovered that
while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah", not a single one
could shout "Truck."

Absolutely amazing! :D

Crows are pretty smart Don, In some ways- I've seen them drop black walnuts onto the roads to crack them open- but when they swoop down to feed- The trucks always seem to get the best of them.

we used to go to my grandmother's summer cottage in central pennsylvania for summer vacation. my two cousins & i all had single shot .22's we learned gun safety & to shoot with. my dad & uncle would give us each 1 .22 short & say if we came back with a crow, we'd get $1. back in the late '50s, a dollar was worth something! you ever try to stalk a crow to within range of a .22 short's range? yes, they are very smart & WARY, i think between the 3 of us, all i ever remember was about $4 getting paid out...... i finally figured out that trying to sneak up on 1 was damn near impossible. hiding in the fenceline of the neighboring farmer's cornfield is how i got my dollar ;) . fun stuff for a group of 10 year olds.

and in reality, this probably really happened (the study) and it probably "only" cost us 4.5 million!
sad, but very possibly true dan. maybe not this study, but MANY others just as ridiculous have happened for lots more money.

Robin, One study in Wyoming looked into the high numbers of eagle and hawk deaths around "wind farms". It was an independent survey or paid for by Wyoming Fish and Game. What they found out was once raptor's "locked onto" a target they would not take their eyes off it making them easy prey for the rotating blades. While the survey probably did not cost a fortune- Millions or Billions in tax breaks and funding for wind farms has been a burden to taxpayers. If this source of energy is so good- why can't they fund themselves?

O.K. Operation dead mouse drop has been started over the island of Guam. For the cost of a mere 8 Million dollars. Dead rodents will be air dropped(parachuted) over Guam to try to poison brown tree snakes. Am I so screwed up and out of touch with reality to think this money would be better spent on our VETRANS?
