I have been toying with the idea of using a combination of material for building rigger tubs.

I was thinking of either using a layer of carbon cloth sandwiched between two layers of 1/16 ply..If I wanted a wood finish

or carbon cloth bonded to the outside of plywood for a carbon look.

Does anyone have exprience with carbon fibre. What weight of cloth should i be using and would it improve the stiffness of the tub.

Any thoughts welcome

Thanks

It will stiffen the tub and allow you to use thinner woods. Hummingbird hydros are built using wood cores with CF. Laminate the CF to a sheet of wood and then cut it as you normally would.

The stronger and more rigid composite will be the one with the wood core and CF sheathing like the Hummingbird has

Its much easier to laminate a lighter cloth. you are going to want a 5.5oz cloth. THIS PAGE has the best quality carbonfiber, and best prices. the "5.5oz '1st Quality' 4HS Satin Weave Carbon Fiber" is what you will want to use on the small hull. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy carbon from greed-bay, its hard to tell what you are getting, and 95% of the time, its poor quality crap. especially if it is cheap. the good carbon wets out properly, and is consistant from one end of the roll to the other. 2 layers on each side of the ply will make it substantially stiffer, and only add a little weight.

I did my full-scale boat transom in all carbon/okume ply.

Thats awesome. I always figured if I saw a c/f hull it was molded. Glad to know it wasn't another one of my crazy ideas.

Did you use the decorative laminate type of cf. it looks to be very shiny!!

Great. I had no idea where i'd even get the stuff. I figured it must be out there though.

Thanks for the heads up on Greed(lol)..bay B)

Too bad Mike is not a lot online lately, at least I didn't notice. Mike is a real wizzard with CF and other exotic materials.

Hi Ken

I work professionally with boats and model boats so c.f is a matherial with many different applications in this job.

The rigger is a copy of a modified SG that the customer decided to have it reinforced with carbon fiber. It is a saw rigger so I had to made a very light building that was reinforced with c.f.The boat(45 size) ready to run only weights 6 pounds equipped with a Mac84.

All my carbon fiber sheets are hand made and the shiny finish is a thin lawyer of PPG clear.

Thanks for your interest.
