Has anyone actually made a Complete carbon fiber tub yet? What are the possibilities of doing this out of flat stock??? Would the stock bond well enough to eachother??? Any advantages or disadvantages???? I know it would cost a small fortune.....

Thanks, Kevin....

I believe Frank Orlic and Terry Keeley have built riggers out of CF, vacuum bagged I think. I am sure they were not cheap.

Take a look at my pics. I have build two c/f boats a 45 and 21 both riggers, not that expensive but alot of work :) https://www.intlwaters.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=776&pos=15

Kevin,

I have done this several times. I use a combination of Kevlar and carbon. What I do is build the tub out of 1/16 sides and 1/32 bottom for single engine boats, 1/16 bottom on a twin. I then lay up two layers of Kevlar on the bottom, going up the sides and snipped on the corners. Once saturated i install 1/4 end grain balsa with carbon and compress the layers till all the resin comes out. You clamp the sides to a 3 X 3 angle to keep it all true and square. Once all clamped you dry out all the resin and clean off the entire hull inside. When finished you have a pretty light layup that will never fall apart.

My gas rigger is built this way. Last week I lost my radio, I hit a bolder dead on with the center section, went over a five foot fence and smacked dead on into a tree. I bent both booms till the left sponson was hitting the tub. NOTHING happened to the boat, pulled the booms, replaced them along with the top skin of the left sponson and I was back in the water in no more than an hours worth of work. If it would have been wood it would have been all over when it hit the bolder.

On my next build I will be doing the same thing but using carbon instead of the plywood for the initial tub.

I can post pictures if you want.

Hey Nick long time no see or hear.

Have you been stuck in deep snow drifts for the last few months?

missed seeing you at the club meetings.

We built full carbon twin-90 Eagle SG hull for the 2000 Nats. We built a foam core, used carbon fiber Biaxial Sleeve (i.e. sock) and vacuum bagged it. Baked it in an industrial oven to post cure the epoxy. Overall the hull was lighter and a lot stiffer than the original plywood version. I will see if I can snap a few pics and post it one day - it's in storage...

Mike P and I built a few of them in 2002. Here is one of Mike P's .21s
Wow now that is what I like!!!! Is that all flat carbon??
Hey Kroggs,

It's not flat carbon. It was vacuum bagged. The molds we made were really easy to use. They were 3 part molds. I just layered mine up in the mold with rollers, so they didn't come out as professional looking as MikeP's. Flat stock carbon is really expensive. I think at TAP plastics, an 18" X 12" peice of 3 ply flat stock is about $60.00. 3 ply is pretty flimsy. You can't even make a radio compartment for that. There are bond issues with it as well. After you shore up the structure enough to make it strong enough to stay together, you've defeated the purpose of using CF. Here is a pic of the .90 Offshore Rigger I made. There was a good reason for painting it. When you lay it out by hand(no vacuum) It is difficult keeping the fibers uniform. I made a .21 too, but I can't find the pics.
