I think 67 and above needles rule with that steel rod

from what I've seen Bushings are best 45 and below

kevin, i didn't want to put a particular size motor , just want everyones thoughts on the subject. thanks you did a great job of explaining it.

Jeff, I prefer the rods with needle bearings. I believe the needles allow for better lubrication compared to the bushings. I also believe that the needles provide a much larger surface area to "wear" over time.

This topic has come up before.

In general terms the alloy bushed rods are lighter and cheaper to make. The problem is a lean run can result in the bush being spun in the rod, which blocks the oil holes and generally is shortly followed by the rod breaking!

The needle roller rods will stand a lean run or two. And lean runs can be caused by factors beyond merely setting the needle wrong. Pressure line springs a leak, tank cracks, backplate seal goes etc.

Probably the lighter allo rods would be better for ultimate performance, but for better durability many manufacturers have gone to the needle roller rods.

why i ask is because the needle in my 2001 cam 45 is rubbing a groove in the drum rotor. have anybody though about putting a cap over the needles and rod to keep this from happening.

Terry,

What about a thin teflon washer between the needles and the drum?

Tim.
