Has anyone ran a brushless motor in a keywest, And if so how did it perform?? What I was thinking is the novak ss5800 system

Just about all Combos have been tried. Personally: 6 cells direct 9l. Not great. 8 cells great.

12 cells I ran a 3630/1.5 aveox x445. Boat won't stay on the water. Ran a 14L Hacker very succesfully on 12 cells x442 or x440/3 35 mph for over 4 minutes. Dennis Whit had a 6 cell rocket on a geared 7L. Sank it at the CAFE Cup 2003.

All the combos have been tried. Great boat but it does have its limits. I would say 35mph is its ussuable limit. Fun though. Keep on trying. Oh I also ran a 10s, 11s and a 13s Hackers on 6 cells. Even tried the 10s on 12 cells and a gear. Screamer. Sounded like a Jet.

Good luckand have fun.

Hi,

Not a good choice. For a 6 cell direct drive setup I would say a 12S Nemesis and a Hacker Navy 40 ESC/BEC m435/3 prop. That will put you around 30MPH for over 4 minutes on 3300s.

12S 115.00, Hacker Navy 40 135.00. Nice fun combo.

Paul.

The Novak system's performance has been spotty in boats. Early models grenaded easily, and one stocker I tested worked okay but I never tried to push it. One of the BL combos offered by Fine or Fullers or Offshore Electrics would be much better. They usually run from $250 to $270 or so for a good BL motor and waterproof ESC; the Novak SS5800s have come down in price but are still in the $215-$230 range. For a little extra money you get more power, a waterproof ESC, and you won't have to buy another BL system when the Novak fails. BTW, you will get water inside this hull almost no matter what you do unless you redesign the hatch.

Over the past 10 years I ran a lot of Key Wests with brushed power, and discovered, like Howard did, that 35 mph was about the top speed for the hull if you wanted to keep it on the water. SAW attempts with the very similar Scat Cat 21 were right at 34 mph on 6 cells. That is plenty fast for the hull, and a lot of fun!

Hi Jay,

There is a new hatch for it, Fine has them also. It does more than give a good seal, designed to give some down force as well. ;)

That hatch was design by Dennis Whitt. Gets rid of the exhaust pipes at the back so you can tape that thing down the right way. plus you can get the gear drive in there a lot easier if you wanted to go that way. The 12S sounds like good advice. An 8L with an M435 y535 maybe might work nice too.

How much do you have left in the batteries with a 12S and a M435/3? It seems that you could go up to a 11S and the M435/3 and still just make 4 minutes.

Hey Guys,

The 12S combo was a fast sport suggestion, for racing a tic hotter motor or a step up in prop would be wise. I think he was looking for a sport setup?

A guy in our club tried to run N2 Hydro with one and it had decent speed but wouldn't run with the Hackers and tended to blow speed controls. He went through a couple systems then gave up on the Novak and went to a Hacker.
