Hey guys,

I normally don't post here but i need some help.. This pertains to car batteries.

I have a kid that works with me. he wants to get into lypo packs.. that class he runs only allows a 2cell. i was lookin around on he net trying to find the best deal.. well they are all over the place as far as price.

so my questions are as follows.

where is a good place to get the packs at a reasonable price.

and what is a good charger and balancer.

thanks for your help

chris

Well my friend, you are going to get a bunch of different answers on this one...

for cars there can be a variety of different types of packs (single, saddle, etc).

I am going to assume that it one of the two I mentioned and give you links to such.

These are Hyperion cells, they are pretty affordable and have a good punch:

Single 2s1p pack, usually for on road touring cars HERE

Double 2s1p saddle pack, usually used for offroad trucks, buggies, truggies HERE

Hope that's what you need.

yes sir,

it is a single saddle pack. i am just not up on the lipo stuff.. what to look for in the packs.. in the old days it was resisatance and voltage.. i am sure that is out the window.

anyone else have any good places or sources for packs.

thanks

Chris,

I race cars and my kids race the cars and run LIipo's. The best batteries and I've tried many is from MAXAMPS . Just type in MAXAMP is the search menu. Great company to deal with, I run them in all my boats, transmitter, and you will not be sorry. Everyone I've sent has been very happy. Tell then Mike told you to call if you want.

Here is a 'dissertation' of sorts on LiPo's covering safety concerns as well as the various terms relative to LiPo performance and charging: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209187

As far as chargers it depends on what you own. If you currently use a Competition Electronics (Turbo 35 and later) for your cars you can have it upgraded for Lipo charging (around $50+shipping) and then add a balancer unit to balance the multiple cells. There are a lot of good stand alone LiPo chargers on the market. I like the Venom Pro (around $139) as it is AC/DC and has a balancer unit built in. The Triton2 and Ice chargers look ok too. Maxx AMPS probably offers one too. On the batteries, if you race, it seems having the highest capacity you can carry (weight??) and the highest 'C' rating possible is desireable. Of course, the higher capacity and the 'C' rating, the higher the cost. I'd say that for most of the backyard bashers or truck/buggy racers, a 3200-4000 mah capacity and 20-25C rating would be sufficient provided the motor sizes are in the stock/mild mod range. My 2 cents. RC

All I'd say is that Maxamps charges the same as the higher end cells... BUT, if one is running only in non-competition way, then having Maxamps would not matter...

If one is going to compete, I'd use other cells.

IMO of course.

I have several GE-Power 2 cell 7.4V 25C 4000mah packs and they are cheap and perform good in my FE cat. Here are a selection of 25Clipo's

thanks man,

can you tell me i noticed the 20c & 25c and it changes with the milliamp.. is that just the nature of the packs or is one better than the other.

i think my guy is looking for 4000 or more 2cell.

are they good or just o.k.

oh, also if someone could chime in.. motors and speedy controls.

is the higher the amperage rating on the speed control better or does it not really matter.

he was looking at a ezrun system 17.5 turn or a 13.5 turn brushless.. they are fairly cheap.. he isn't wanting to plunk a bunch of bucks down right away and i found some on fleabay for around 70 - 90 bucks speedcontrol motor and some sort of programmer?

thanks again for your guys help

Chris,

If you guys are running boats this weekend, I could meet up with you and go over your battery/ESC/motor situation in detail.

I also found out that the lake in Pleasant Hill will let you use a real boat for retrieval, but it can not be motorized.

Chris, they're good performers.I made 66km/h with 2X 7.4v in my FE cat. They get warm but not hot.
