My wife and I are leaving for Austrailia and New Zealand on Fri for a tour. We have some free time from the tour and would like some ideas on things to see that are not the usual tourist things to see and also some restaurant suggestions

Melbourne , we are staying at the LANGHAM

CARNES, we are staying at the SILKY OAKS LODGE

SIDNEY, staying at the InterContinental

Wellington New Zealand, staying at the Copthorne Oriental Bay

Queens town, staying at Softel Queenstown Hotel and spa

The reason I listed where we are staying is because transportation issues needing to use taxies or local public transportation

Thanks in advance for your ideas and imput.

Hi Doc,

When you are in Sydney book a dinner cruise on the Harbour in the evening. Should only be a short walk to the wharf from your Hotel.

Give me some Sydney dates and I will see what else there is to do.

When you arrive at the Langham in Melbourne everything is Pink and keep your back to the wall with the bell boys, they think everyone is beautiful.

Hey Doc,

If you have a good heart and you don't mind heights, take the walk up to the top of the bridge in Sydney harbor. I'm sure Paul will have lots of suggestions. He showed my wife and I a good time.

One of the best restaurants in the world is in Sydney. Rockpool Bar and Grill. If your paying I'm coming.

Langham is a very nice hotel...great spot near the 'lovely' Yarra River and southbank, which is nice at night...maybe jump on a river boat and cruise up and down for dinner one night

Cairns - check out the croc farms and get on a boat out to the reef

Great country, even better people. It would take too long to advise on the sights, but I attached a few pictures from my 2008 trip.

As far as New Zealand, contact Grahame Haines. He lives on the northern island and is a fun person to deal with. Spent some time with him and his wife last summer, can't ask for a nicer couple. He does have a membership here in the forums so reaching him shouldn't be a problem. I also sent him an email with your first post as he is in the forums infrequently.

Hi Doc,

While in Wellington check out the National Museum Called "Te Papa" it's on/near the waterfront, also "Weta workshops". This is the special effects company that has worked with Sir Peter Jackson on movies like "Lord of the Rings" trilodgy and "The Hobbit " trilodgy as well as " Avatar " and others.Excellent Group of Boaters in Wellington as well.

Melbourne has too many top restaurants to choose from lol. Jump on a wine tour to the yarra valley for the best views, food and drinks within an hour of Melbourne. Mt dandynong has the sky high restaurant with top views of the city and surrounds. The tram car restaurant used to be great as well. St Kilda is worth a visit as well as south bank. A hot air balloon ride might be nice if you can get in one. If you like Italian, check out lygon street. Queen Victoria market has some nice deli s and foods. If you like old buildings, things like the old anz bank are worth a look, there are some nice old theaters in Melbourne too. The botanical gardens is a nice walk. The tennis is on at the moment and you may get into a match. Great views of the city at night can be seen from the yarra boulevard. There are boutique beer breweries everywhere if you like that

A couple of things to check out

Have fun!!
