If you have kept up with my posts, you know I have a heavy aviation background,

This has given me the rare chance to meet a few of the Icons of flight, Ret Gen Chuck Yeager was one and here is the other:

Ret Lt Col Bob Hoover passed away yesterday, Bob was one of the Dolittle raiders that made it back from the raid on Japan, A true hero in every way.

I meet Bob at a airshow in the early 80's, he was doing shows with the Rockwell sponsered at that time P-51 Mustang, The plane was a beauty, I spent over a hour with him just talkin specs, it was near the end of the show and people were startin to file out and I said man it would be great to go up in one of those Bob, He smiled looked around and said well the field's still open if ya dont mind sitting on my toobox lets go.

Needless to say I jumped right in, As we were taxing out I noticed that ya cant see a damn thing but engine and prop, canopy slid back and head out the side to see, I said Man how do ya know where your goin, Bob laughed and said the tail comes up at 70 hang on.......Yaaaaaaaaaa a V-12 at full song is music and tingles, the SMOOTHEST takeoff I have ever seen, We leveled off and I talked him in to doing a few strafing run's on a hay field, scared the hell outta some rabbits and gophers!!! Ha,Ha, By the way a the sound of the engine spooling in a dive in a Mustang is something to behold. I shook Bobs hand and thanked him, All he said was its been a pleasure meeting you Son,

Bob you will be missed,

Gene :D

Bob Hoover was indeed a great man..

I saw footage of him pouring a cup of coffee while doing a roll.(never spilled a drop). That was some of the most impressive footage i have ever seen. All this while flying a twin engine Shrike Commander..

Bob Hoover is a Hero and an Icon that should never be forgotten.

I use to have the Cox 1/2A power u control mustang that gene speaks of…Very cool. .yellow and all…right up my alley..

He will be missed.

It is with a heavy heart to here of his passing. I too grew up at the airport, in Livermore Ca. for a while back then it was the P-40 capital of the world. A man named John Paul had a hangar next to my Dad`s. I got to watch him piece together 2 of these rare warbirds, and even got to fly in one of them. Because of this I got to meet many of aviations finest, including Bob. He simply was know as the greatest pilot EVER, He will be missed!!!!
