how can anodizing be removed from aluminum?

Easy-off oven cleaner will do it, so will some of the mag wheel cleaners. They will turn the alum black but you can buff it back to a shine.

Lye and water will strip it off . That's what I use to desmut the aluninum before I do my own anodysing. If I have a problem and need to remove it I just put it back in the lye and water mix. Be carefull though if you leave it in too long it will also eat away the aluminum.
