I'm stripping the machined nylon gears when I really push my 20 mono, especially when it's cold out (teeth getting brittle?)

Other than a "molded" nylon gear, the machined MC901 that I'm using seems to have the best specs of any of the plastics so it looks like some sort of metal is in order.

The pinion on the motor is brass and I was thinking of making the spur from 7075 aluminum and having it hard coated (hard annodize) for wearability. Here's a shot of the gearbox:

https://www.intlwaters.com/gallery/displayimage...um=70&pos=4

The motor turns 30,000 rpm plus and the ratio is 1.5:1.

Just looking at QTC I can get a Stainless Steel gear to directly replace the nylon, how 'bout that?

Any of our Euro friends gone this route?

Terry I've been looking for gears myself and found these sites. http://www.hpcgears.com/index.htm , http://www.qtcgears.com/RFQ/SpurGears.htm

Jorn from http://www.fokusracing.no/ has also been a great help.

By the way, I'm building a new gear driven 20 mono & it's not a Speedmaster this time. Emily's Sport 20 is nearly finished which has the laid down gear drive I built for it. If you decide to buy metal gears and it's cost wise to order in larger volumes I'll split the cost with you.

Most European gears are Metal/Pinion and Delrin(Acetal)/Box.

Metal on metal is VERY noisy.(and there is a need for something cheap to strip/break ,instead of engine.)

But if you can (have) machined gears , try P.E.E.K. with teflon of carbon added (or both)

We use P.E.E.K. in the 'drive-train' replacing Permaglide-bushings.

Thanks much for that Hendrix, I really like the idea of a plastic gear instead of metal on metal. That carbon filled PEEK has potential with it's 26,000 psi tensile strength. The MC901 nylon from QTC has a tensile of 81 MPa which is about 11, 750 psi, and like I mentioned I only break them when pushed hard. If the PEEK doesn't work I'll try 7075, at 76,000 it's gotta hold!

Thanks for the help Joe, I've been getting gears from QTC but I've wasted about 6 nylon and one fairly expensive fiber filled nylon gear in the four years I've run the boat.

Think I'm gonna try machining my own from that carbon filled PEEK Hendrix mentioned. :)

Terry send me your address and I'd send you some some graphite filled UHMW-PE (Black Nylatron) rounds to try as well. I have a ton of it and It's much stronger than Delrin. The company I got it from uses it to make industrial rollers. I showed it to Steve Ball and he thought it would be good for gears but I do not have the skill to make my own. Here is a link:
