Don,

I can't remeber his name but there was a guy on listbot that was all about putting a turbine in/on a boat (along with ceramic heads, pistons, cases and other space age thoughts). He's probably doing a happy dance right now. :D

I saw that this morning..........I tried to imagine it turning with a 3 lb turbine mounted way above the boat like a swamp buggy.

$$$$$$SPLASH$$$$$.......$3000 trubine in the water

You guys ever hear that story of some people finding a pickup truck smattered half way up into the side of a mountain? Turns out some good ol boy decided to put a jet engine in the back of his truck....see how fast he would go. Too bad he did not understand aerodynamic principles and speed very well. I would hate to see this boat out of control with a dead radio if it would ever get up to any speed. But just looking at it.....can you say top heavy?

I wonder how much stuff he's set on fire with this thing? Give real meaning to "hot pits"

Wasn't it Dennis Cessna???

I once saw a video of a german Surprice cat with a turbine using thrust power, it didn't run very fast.

Also imagine getting water in the engine at 100k+ rpm. Can you say Bye bye engine  , can be a very expensive boat ride.

I saw that, I thought Turbines hate water?????

There is a guy in San Fran (Julio) who has a turbine in an Apache, but it is completely inclosed in the hull, this Ebay one looks like it would be a lot more suseptable to water ingestion.

"Oh excuse me guys, kindly bring your boats in so I can run my turbine without any water spray"!

Yeah that would go over real well at our pond.

There was one being sold a while back that had a turbojet engine set down inside the hull and thrusting out thru a hole in the transom. It was built by a guy up in Maryland (near Baltimore), apparently one of the folks who frequents the hobby shop in Crofton, Maryland, where they do lot with jet RC airplanes. Yes, if it flips, the turbine will probably be destroyed by the ingested water. Seems to me, the one from Crofton wasn't particularly fast, just exciting to think about. I dunno, if a $250 Zenoah 260 can push a cat or mono 75 mph, do I want to spend $3,000 and risk shucking the blades off a turbine wheel turning 200,000 rpm? I'll just watch.

Mike T. I remember that boat it was made by the big guy with the fumanchu mustache . He worked there in the evenings at GPA hobbies in crofton,Md. Last time i asked him about that Apache and he said it ran many laps at the lake in Columbia but when he slowed it down to bring it back in the backwash came into the transom and killed the turbine. He no longer works there and is living in Glen Burnie so i am told. The boat was beautiful but they left a 2inch gap around the rear of the exhaust and that is where the water came in. Don this guy we are talking about flies choppers with Tony M.

THat must be the reason for the 1/4" thick radio box..........it's all getting clearer to me now

Actually the person you were referring was Bill Setzler, he flies planes not copters. And I think Tony would probably quit flying before he would fly with him...

Diden't you watch the TV show Myth Busters? They tried to re-create that story and it diden't work. ;)

I have seen some people make jet engines out of turbo chargers from truck engines. I would love to build one to keep the neighbors up at night!

I've seen them on the www - they look awesome. Apparently getting the turbo bearings to stay together with the heat is a problem. http://www.pulse-jets.com/jetengine/jete.htm

Anyone strapped a pulse jet to a boat?

LOL...no i did not see the tv show. And i would not want to try and recreate it!

Anyone remember the first turbine powered unlimited hydro? The boat carried no name but was numbered the U-95. 1974 or 75 i believe. Boat was showing promise until like the 4th race into the season, one of its twin tubines "let go". Went through the bottom of the boat. Boat went to the bottom of the river! They learned the hard way about scatter shields.
