wondering how well would one work on a modified engine and if the tune pipe works correctly using an exhaust throttle(would be on a K& B) --never been around one and am kinda curious--also do they run fuel line to ventery which is also high side needle no low side and adjust idle off the exhaust side-- ANY info/help would be great..

they work awesome on the k/b engines im running one today im leaving to go now we can chat latter

I ran exhaust throttles on K&B's for a long time. You got it right Yoda... fuel line goes to the venturi like it would with a regular carb, and adjust needle there (may be able to still use a 3rd channel mixture as well?). Setting idle and what not is the same as you would with a carb, as the "throttle" lever is on the exhaust throttle.

When the balance of intake tube length and fuel tank level are just right an exhaust throttle set works as well if not better than a barrel valve carb !!

The downside to them which I am sure took them out of favor was the MESS ! .... Snot goo castor slime everywhere !!

A few small manufactures like Carl Brey had success with o-ring sealed units, but most of the better Ex valves were metal to metal and leaked a little when new and a LOT after some use.

One of the BEST was build by L.A.W. and was hard anodized on all the pieces.

The outboards once used guillotine style valves with dump exhaust, some were inline barrel valves with tuned pipes. Made no difference to engine what type exhaust was fitted because they are downstream of the valve.

cool now were gettin some info rolling here, Ive searched all over and havent found to much on inboard set-ups anyplace and nothing but bits and pieces at that--you know for the one guy that asks there are a hundred that didnt but would like to know..

I remember when these where popular. At the time carbs wheren't very good, or better stated that they where never quite right. Then the marine engines started coming from the factory with good carbs and the exhaust throttles went by the wayside. Today, I think they would compete just fine but would be about the same price as a good carb, maybe even a little more.

everyboat in my garage has an exhaust throttle except my gas boats. im talking inboards, outboards, piccos and k/b. i like their idle caracteristics and their awseome response. scott is correct they do leave a mess in the boat but i think the other pros of them beat out the mess.the c/b law and gardner were my choice prather made a good one also i just didnt have as nice of appeal to me but the worked just as good.i have been kicking around the idea of setting up a 26 zen with one i already have a venturi and an adaptor for the intake side. actually i will be testing this in your old pink calcraft i got from you.

You get a VIABLE exhaust throttle set up for a gas engine that can handle the heat and not leak like a wounded whales oil gland .... you have a customer for that product.

yah maybe we could trade that calcraft lol!

nothing really specific yet---Im just kinda hunting and pecking for some info before i decided to try one out and so far sounds like im gonna be snatching one up so specific info needed would be, and bare with me since i havent been around one, tuning tips--pipe choice--I believe I have a macs quiet pipe now at least thats my best guess to what it is--and ive got a line on a new prather E.T. so thats what im gonna go with---still need to find a venturi though..

let me know which k/b you have disk or drum i have a venturi for you. i like to to run an open nitro pipe on the k/b 7.5 measure from where the header bolts on to the weld or peak of the pipe i like 9.5 inches run an octura x450 prop and in a mono thats a low 50 mph consitent set up. they tune just like a single needle carb as far as rich and lean. are you putting it in a mono or hydro?

I have several Exhaust throttles that I am about to list. Some folks were running them on hte end of the tuned pipe with success. It gets the mess out of the hull at the expense of a long cable linkage.

should be model 9181 IB 7.5 exhaust over flywheel -- going into AC magnum so far i have a 447/3 to work over rough water boat but i live in kansas its rough all to often--just bought a prather 20* ET so that parts covered now

i cant remember if the 9181 is the disk or drum i think its the disk. if its the disk engine and it has the red or purple single needle carb you can lock that open with the barrel screw and that works real good.

I never thought about putting it there. It could be made much smaller.
