this is kinda a knock off from 21 rigger selection i'm wondering what would be the selection for a 45 rigger if you had to build for next year? long and short list welcomed

Crapshooter completely dominates the 40 class in my opinion.. Tony J

A CD Machine Hawk just won the District 4 high point series for 2009 (all boats entered, not just 40 hydros).

For those that do not know...CD Machine = David Preusse

I'm not just a spokesman, I also own one, see avitar.

Leighton,

JAE-45 without a doubt.

Good Luck,

Mark Sholund

Mark,

The boats I quoted in the 21 rigger thread were based upon QUALITY, SUCCESS on the racing circuit and CURRENT AVAILABILITY. For the 45's I would say the same thing but add in the 45 Crapshooter as Tony noted for sure. As far as I know, or have seen to date, the JAE 21 or 45 boats/kits are NOT yet available. Only prototypes on a very limited basis to a few racers for testing purposes. Very few people have seen them much less race with/against them.

Since they are intended to be available in kit form, the success of them may well rest with the precise building of them. The same can be said of the Hawk. In certain hands, like David Preusse and Steve Ball, they are rockets. In other hands, I have seen an average boat at best. That is not the same as a RTR Roadrunner, Crapshooter, UFO, etc. FWIW, I will try a JAE 21 when they are released, I have my name on the list.

The Crapshooter 45 I believe is the best 45 and probably the best Crapshooter that Stu Barr builds. I have yet to see a superior boat in terms of speed and handling in racing conditions. I have had one for at least 5 years. I have wrecked it and repaired it since it is so competitive.

I did see David Hall run his proto 45 JAP and it looked promising at our lake in Huntsville. He has tested it vary little. It may become as competative as a C/S but it is not there yet. Also it is a type of boat that quality of the builder will play into how well the boat will perform. These issues are markedly reduced when Stu or Ralph[ Road Runner] build 80-90% of the boat. Gary

JohnW,

Just my $.02 (and many hrs of listening to Rod answer my questions). You mentioned, "Since they are intended to be available in kit form, the success of them may well rest with the precise building of them."

The point of the JAE was to offer a "simple to build boat" that would be competitive for low $$. I KNOW this was the intent; and as a 1st timer builder/racer, I'm a perfect case study LOL. Cutting and assembling straight pieces of wood (vs curves mounted at precise angles) is as simplified as it is ever gonna get. I spoke w/Rod about preciseness of engine placement, CG etc, sponson AOA, length/widths etc etc). His answers were "Todd, just get the engine 'close' to the plans; as for CG, as far as we can tell from testing the CG can be anywhere in about an 8" range, so dont worry about it".... etc, etc. Point being that except for the 1% world racer/National Record setters, the boat design will allow mistakes/variation and still be competitive.

How competitive? I've only got the needle "spot on" (I'm always too rich) 1 race day of the 5? races I've entered (and not hit something etc). I not only won 1st in 3 of 4 races, but lapped 3 of the 5 boats (and in the race I didnt win, I was trying to lap the "3rd" place boat and got washed out on lap 5) all while running out in lane 10? (like 30' of the bouys LOL) on the corners. There were alot of raised eyebrows and muttering! BTW I'm a lousy driver, but our club has a number of seasoned boaters who CAN drive, have built NICE/well-made boats and hold Lane 1 w/o crashing; but it doesnt matter when I get the needle right and dont crash.

You have first hand knowlege of how easy it is to build a boat thats not straight. As much as you shake running your 12, you would go into cardiac arrest trying to pilot a 45.

Win the A hydro cup, and then you'll have something to brag about.

Larry, you are SUCH a ball buster! Straight boat?!!! Bring your ruler next race big guy! And while, I aint likely to win the over all points cup (I've even missed 2 races)- I'm STILL ahead of you in points - EVERY ONE of that armada of boats you have! Talk your smack my friend.... but I'm looking to take home that trophy you put up for the next race... and you KNOW it's mine to lose.... hope you'll be pitting again for me too! :) Oh Yeah - Got a "Gilligan hat" I'll be wearin! (wont Tim love that!) :)

But you're right about a .45 - would scare me to death!!

By the time the bull sh*t clears you'll be long gone. If you ask him nice, Shane might help you with your arithmetic.

Just average engineers? I would love to see a 45 JAE, photo's please shooters, runners, japs, jags, whatever you got.....

The new Jag III is one awsome built boat it runs very very well. I think anyone in the market for a 45 hydro should give this boat a very serious look. You will not be disappointed.

Latest testing of Davids 45 JAE H version was 80mph topspeed and anywhere from 77 to 79 on all other passes. It was flying and did so very easily. It was hitting higher speeds than some of the lcal big block twins. Looks very promising for heat racing.

Bill,

What propeller was David running?

How did the boat turn?

Any pictures?

Thanks,
