So on my outboard im not getting any cooling water out of the tell tale when on the hose. Last season in the water only a little came out and the motor stayed cool. New impeller 2 years ago when lower unit was replaced. It looks like water is sucked from the muffs at it stops spraying but nothing comes out. I see water coming out of what I believe is the shift tube? When I blow in to the water outlet it has very little resistance. Any advice appreciated!

Thanks tom

Tom,

Water supply hose has probably dry rotted and fallen apart or just plain disconnected.

Thanks. Brad.

On your engine the water tube is metal, & sleeves into a rubber grommet on both ends. The grommet is sleeved inside the water pump on the bottom & another grommet is sleeved inside a casting on the engine end. The water supply tube won't/can't fall off, but if either grommet is rotted or was cut by the tube upon assembly you will lose water to the powerhead. The plastic water pump housing could be warped, allowing the pump to suck air or the stainless insert that the impellor rides in could be scored by sand sucked into the pump. IF you find an issue with the pump housing or insert, i would reccommend replacing housing, impellor, insert & baseplate. Being an old fla. boy, i didn't think about some water may have been trapped in the pump, froze & cracked it. You say you see water coming out by the shift tube, can you describe the area/location a little better? Up by the engine, down by the pump..........i still have a manual for your engine you can have for free, all i need is an addy

Repair manual.... oh that might help. Let me take a video to show where water comes out. I believe it sucks because the water at the muffs stops spraying out. You might be on to something with the grommets. Ill post video later today.

Had to work late so no time for video today. I took a picture to show where the water does come out. You can see what I understand is the shift tube and a hole in front of it. This is where water comes out. Im guessing I just need to take it apart and see what the problem is.

Robin can you take some pictures of this section of the repair manual for me?

Im thinking it might be those grommets.

Thanks!

Tom

That is the shift rod, tom. I assume the water comes out around the top of the rod? 'Cuz if it's the bottom, somehow the water is going down the propshaft (also drives the water pump impellor), into the lower unit & back up around the shift shaft. Not impossible, but HIGHLY unlikely. Would need to have 3 separate seals fail, & it would be puking hypoid oil to boot! From the top - out of what is called the tower housing, means the tube from the pump to the powerhead or the pump itself is leaking. More than likely on the output side (the tube side), since you still see suction, a leak on the intake side (the pump) would kill that. I'll try pics, but just sending it to you would be better. Any further diagnosis will need to be done with the lower removed.

Road trip - come on RRRobin , you got nothing but time

Took the lower unit off and no easy to identify problems. The grommet looked good. The pump has no external flaws. Should I disassemble the pump next?

I assume another grommet is on the other end of the tube. How hard is that to get to?

Thanks!

Tom

I had the idea to put the hose up to the tube and see if water would come out the pee hole. It did not.

Does it have a thermostat after the tube? if so where is it? how do I get to it?

Can I call one of you guys for advice?

did you try blowing air up the telltale outlet? possibly some crud in that portion. yes that looks like the thermostat housing.

good luck john

i can blow in to the tell tale outlet and it never gives any resistance. I can blow all I want. it never builds up any pressure.

Tom that is the thermostat and poppet valve cover. One or both is stuck open. Pull the cover off and have a look. Be careful there is a fairly heavy spring on top of the poppet diaphragm (lower chamber). Pull the poppet valve out and see if there is debris on the seat. Check the thermostat to see if stuck open. Pm sent.

Mike's on top of it! He's currently in the business, it's been 20 years since i messed with them. What he knows/does everyday, i have to look in the manual. Listen to mike, tom. If i can help more, lmk.
