    A trip back in time!

Funny you would say that, John. My 1/8th scale 2000 Elam Plus had a rudder set up that was a welded rod scale style mount with a hard mounted rudder on a music wire shaft. That was fine, until I hit an underwater branch that bent the shaft 60* and seriously tweeked the bracket. I was able...

Could you also include 1/8 fin dimensions. I'm going to need some fins in the future as well, but not yet :(

    My new ride

I'm surprised you didn't bring it to the show today. I bet there were several people that would have loved it

Looking for a couple decent pictures.

The on the water, head on shot could be Evansville. The rest are in Seattle. The shots with the Squire truck were taken on 4th Avenue, next to the Kingdome. The one showing the truck side, with the door open, shows two triangle topped towers. The one on the left is the "Smith Tower", at one...

Looking for a couple decent pictures.

Hate to tell you this but it was the U-31 Circus Circus in 1979-80 and the Spirit of the Air Force in 1981. Gotta love the shark teeth under the bulnose ;)

Jim, could you please post a picture or two of the inside of your boat? It could be helpful for us to see what you've got going on.

Here's some pictures that show the location of the radio box, engine, fuel tanks and turn fin on my 2000 Elam Plus. I put more information in a private message but these pictures are in both

    Shaft Oiler or Grease?

Dead Horse? How about this one?

    Hydroplane C/G Starting Point

You still have to seal the bottom of the deck and epoxy the deck down and that adds weight. You still have to fill and seal the outside of the hull, after installing the decks, and that adds weight. You have to prime and paint the hull, add decals and clearcoat over all of that, again adding...

    Hydroplane C/G Starting Point

Jim, you don't want to add ballast to the boat before you run it. If the boat doesn't need it and you added it, then you would have to tear the deck off and replace it to get that ballast out. Something else you need to remember is that you can lift the back of the boat by using a lifting prop...

    Hydroplane C/G Starting Point

Jim, that distance is the go-to because it's where most boats start to run well. What you will find is that, unless you have a boat that is very "tail heavy", most boats won't need much, if any, ballast in the nose to get it to run decently at that balance point. If you go much further aft...

    Shaft Oiler or Grease?

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told a while back that an "S" bend prevented a flex from "whipping" inside the stuffing tube in the same way that a third centered bushing or needle bearing does with a hard shaft. Could a flex that is "whipping" in the middle of the stuffing tube throw...

My doctor has already cleared me to go back to work in early March so I figure I can go back to work on the boats, that is as long as I stay within the physical limitations they have me under. Yes, it tends to suck that I'm limited but it does beat the alternative ;)

    Hydroplane C/G Starting Point

Trust me, I get it. When I'm working, I spend anywhere from 9 to 17 hours a day, not counting commuting time to and from work, on the job. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to work on my boats for six weeks due to health issues that I'm presently recovering from. Not going to go into it here...

Looks like one of the boats Scott Meyers builds. Would I be correct in assuming that it's a kit build?

That depends on who you're talking to. In the case of my 1/8th scale 2000 Elam Plus, it's to the center of the fin. To the furthest forward point of the fin, it's about an inch to the sponson transom.

I was agreeing with you and clarifying for the new builders. If we were dealing with those that have built boats in the past, I wouldn't have gone there, other than tails and wings. You have to remember, however, hardware can refer to any metal parts on the boat. That includes tail mounts...
