Taps- who has good ones?

So a few months back my 40+ year old 4-40 tap out of my MAC Tools tap and die set form back when I spun wrenches finally gave up the ghost. I have bought a couple since even going with McMaster-Carr but everything seems to be cheap Chinese junk. Anyone know of a source for high quality hopefully US made taps?

We used a lot of Union Butterfield roll-form and cut taps for our automated high volume tapping machines. Pricy up front but cost effective in the long run.

Look again in Mcmaster carr, I bought a set made for stainless steel and they where made in the US.

Typically I use cutting taps. I was told some time ago forming taps are not a good idea on small sizes like 2-56, 4-40, etc. because of the higher torque required to turn them vs. a cutting tap and the risk of breaking. Don't know if that's true as I never tried.

I buy Irwin taps at Ace Hardware....but, you have to look at package for source country. My 4-40 and 6-32 are US made, so they say.
More and more crap coming from China with each passing week, it seems.

Another thing, just because packaging states Made In USA, it doesn't mean piece inside package USA made....govt allows them to state Made In USA if final packaging is in US, or whatever country....thus, they buying in bulk from foreign source.

Me as a German here in the US. I always get my stuff from Hoffmann Group. It is a German company who also have a location here. Browse trough there catalog .
Btw .... the pics are way better than Mc Master.

Forum taps 4-40 for alum and delrin works great.Be sure to use the drill size for that tap.I use them all the time and never had a problem.

Have you seen any SAE on that site ? They may be Metric only.

Maybe there search doesn't work but after looking for a while I searched SAE and nothing, 4-40 and got nothing

Daniel, the link you posted takes you to a 4-40 tap, look at the left hand column for sizes.

Go to the search filter and look for Threads.
You’ll find UNC , UNF, UNEF even left hand .

Yea that is why I posted the link. Looked up the 4-40 and posted it.

It was the link in lower quote where I wasn't seeing SAE.
