What is the interest in stainless steel high performance glow plugs?

In a couple of weeks I will meet with a manufacturer that plans to produce stainless steel glow plugs. I expect them to be priced higher than standard glow plugs.

What is the interest for these plugs? If no one wants to try them, of course I will not import them.

Al, I do not see the value in a stainless plug. Assuming everyone takes care of there engines the steel plugs will not corrode.

Now if you can make some aluminum plugs I might be interested.
 
The "REAL " need is for a GOOD plug that can be compared to the MC-9 and MC-8.
The manufactures for a good quality plug that can handle 50% and Greater are GONE.
Odonell not producing, MCCoy Done..The current plug Rossi can not live in BG BLOCK on 60%.
DON'T NEED a GIMMICK! Need a QUALITY Product that STAND UP to the HIGH NITRO.

I just received in an order of plugs from Odonnell, so they are producing plugs.
 
Al, my thoughts are it is not worth it. Glow plug bodies are made of free machining steel, mainly to save on drilling tools when making the holes. If one was to use SS I suspect it would be 400 series like 416 for example as it machines easier than 300 series like 316. Even 400 series can tarnish. I can’t see anyone wanting to battle 300 series for glow plug bodies. I used the numbers just as examples. Chemistry and size of the wire would be great to spend time on though. K&B admits their 1L plugs are platinum and rhodium. They have 4 materials in their HP plug but won’t share what the other 2 metals are. Odonnell won’t share any materials in the wire . Does Rossi share this info? Jeff Lutz

Jeff, free machining steels used to contain lead. Do the newer ones still have it and how would it affect the resistance weld to anchor the wire? Sorry, just thinking out load and not wanting to high Jack Al’s thread.

John, it’s not a problem attaching the wire, as I do know for a fact Odonnell uses free machining steel as a example. Contact Odonnell he will share the plug body material and you can ask away about your deep thoughts. He will not share wire material though. Ohisson also used free machining steel and made components for many plugs you have held in your hands over the lengthy amount of time you have been in the hobby. Jeff
 
Thanks Jeff for the info!! Fortunately Steve seems to use some superior wire and process to be one of the few plugs that will last for a lot of runs without failure using 60% nitro. Using the same engine setup with most other plugs one run or so per plug can be a normal a day.

This idea may have come about from guy's that run in salt water. It may be advantageous in that environment.
