Tapered collets are first rough machined. All pieces must be the same size to get the correct internal size when held in the grinding fixture. This is necessary because the split collets are held by the front & back in their grinding fixture. The use of .0001 indicators on the carriage, crossfeed & the compound make repeated measurement easy.
