Pictures of Designs of the Past Many 3 D Tom Daniels Boats. I was the 1978 IMPBA Oval Champ in A-B mono with Tom's 3-D rough stuff similar to the one in the picture that may be a 40 boat I bought it off one of our race team members at the Toledo radio show right before we left. I would have swept all the classes as champ I was only 19 years old and didn't realize you were supposed enter every category I thought it was automatic. The oval racing class is the most difficult though and I pulled that off at The last second to a standing ovation beating Howard Hole from Hawaii. We then shook hands as it was a great race done exactly how they should be. Clean racing. I knew the boat ran about 40 miles an hour from record trials at Thread lake in Flint Michigan. Back in those days I used to see John Bridge Lou Medetal Ronnie Walker and Martin Davis. I was there the day Martin broke 90 mph. Bridge and Walker's twins geared together in a large crapshooter type outrigor were something that got the crowds attention, and a sight to behold. My 20 boat may have had a tiny edge of speed but I out drove him on the final corner to win by a boat length. Tom Daniels made a massive contribution to the RC boating industry with his Deep Vees. They were great looking extremely indestructible and extremely fast and probably resembled realistic boats a lot more than anything at the time the hatch had a little seat and scoops on it was pretty cool you could put three drivers on it. My brother and I hit head-on with my 60 cigarette Dumas boat versus his 3-D ruff stuff each at 50 mph his Boat didn't have a mark on it mine was obliterated the next week I had gray primer patches all over my beautiful aero marine two paint job. I have slides of that I need to get converted to some pics to show you guys it was a beautiful paint job I duplicated off a picture on the front of flying models magazine
